History

The Nordenskjöld Archipelago was discovered in 1740 during the Great Northern Expedition by the surveyor group Nikifor Chekin , which was part of the Taimyr detachment Khariton Laptev . The name in honor of Niels Adolf Eric Nordensjöld was received only in 1893 while sailing along the coast of Siberia, the Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen on the ship " Fram ".

The group of Litke islands was named in 1901 in honor of the Russian navigator and polar explorer, President of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Petersburg, Count F. P. Litke, Russian geologist Baron E. V. Toll during a polar expedition to the St. John’s wort bar, which was then named one of the islands in honor of the Russian and Czech astronomer Joseph Sikora (Joseph Iosifovich Sikora, Czech. Josef Sýkora ; * 1870 - † 1944 ), a member of the Russian-Swedish expedition to Spitsbergen .
