Brief historical background

Envious of the fantastic successes of his friend Hitler in Europe in 1940, Mussolini wanted to join his military glory. Duce had the idea of starting his war. For this purpose, North Africa was chosen, or rather Egypt, covered by British troops. Using the neighboring Libya as a bridgehead, Italian troops invaded Egypt in September 1940, but were defeated. To prevent the whole of North Africa from coming under British control, Hitler sent a light African division to Tripoli on February 14, 1941 under the command of Lieutenant General Erwin Eugen Johannes Rommel .

Description

Premium sleeve tape “AFRIKA”.

The Africa sleeve insignia ( German Ärmelband “AFRIKA” ) was established in February 1943 by Hitler, which ordered the replacement of Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine cuffs with the text “AFRIKA”, as well as the ground forces with the inscription “AFRIKAKORPS”. After its establishment, it changed its status, and became not just a testament to membership in the African Corps, but an award for participating in the campaign.

The ribbon was beige with a silver border around the edges and the inscription “AFRIKA” embroidered with silver cotton in the middle. The edges of the inscription frame the image of palm trees embroidered with threads of the same color. The width of the tape is 33 millimeters. The right to the Africa tape was reserved for military personnel who had served in North Africa for 6 months or were injured in the theater of war. In the last months of the campaign, new award conditions were introduced - at least 4 months of service.
