Symphony No. 39 (Rosetti)

Symphony (No. 39) in G minor, Murray A42 / Kaul I: 27 - the only minor symphony by Antonio Rosetti , written in March 1787 in Wallerstein (autograph says: “composta nel mese di Marzo 1787 à Wallerstein” - Italian. “Composed in the month of March 1787 [year] in Wallerstein ” ). By the power of music, it is comparable to the symphony No. 39 by J. Haydn (1767 or 1768) written in the same key and the symphony No. 40 of V. A. Mozart (July 1788). However, never in the life of Rosetti was a symphony published. Judging by the location of the manuscripts, in the early 1790s it was performed in Berlin and London . Today it is the most performed and most famous symphony of Rosetti.

Music

  • I. Vivace.
  • II. Menuetto fresco. Allegretto. - Trio. - Menuetto da capo.
  • III. Andante ma allegretto.
  • IV. Finale. Capriccio. Allegretto scherzante.

The first part begins immediately with the piano, the main motive for the whole form, which fully reflects the then prevailing ideas of storm and onslaught . In three conducts of the theme, the orchestra is gradually gaining strength. The culmination falls on the development , built on the main motive.

The minuet is also written in minor. Although it lacks the power and aspiration of the first part, the measured movement of music is not without impetuosity. The trio, on the other hand, playfully and frivolously, the constant grace notes add to its inherent jumping ability.

The third part is written in parallel to the main key in B flat major. Rosetti was especially famous for his works of this kind. This Andante is a delicate play, not without sly humor.

The finale is moderately fussy, brisk capriccio with the reflections of the first movement ending in major.
