Amateur career
Yoan Pablo Hernandez began boxing with the Cuban national team at a very young age. He received silver at the cadet world championship (under 17 years). Yoan won the World Junior Championship in 2002 in Santiago de Cuba in heavyweight, but twice lost to compatriot Odlanier Solis and was forced to go down in weight. Light heavyweight (178 pounds) in 2003, Hernandez won the silver medal at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, where he lost to Ramiro Reduccinto in the final. Hernandez took part in the 2004 Summer Olympics for his native country, where he was defeated in the second round light heavyweight (81 kg) by Evgeni Makarenko , two-time world champion. Although he was considered one of the best avenues in Cuban boxing, he left his homeland and moved to Germany.
Professional career
Hernandez made his debut in the professional ring in September 2005. In June 2007, he knocked out in the first round of the Norwegian Thomas Hanswall (25-3-2). After 2 months, he knocked out Brazilian Daniel Bisbo in the first round, and won the WBA Fedelatin title in the first heavyweight. In December 2007, in the defense of the title again in the first round he knocked out his rival, New Zealander Mohamed Azzaui , and added the WBC Latino title to his achievements. In the next match in March 2008, he lost by knockout in the third round, the former world champion Guyanese Wayne Braithwaite . In October 2005, by a decision of the majority of the judges, Michael Simms was defeated in an 8-round fight in a competitive match with a slight advantage. In October 2009, Serb Edan Lynchia (17-1) defeated and won the IBF Intercontinental World Champion title. In March 2010 he defended the title against Argentinean Cesar David Krenz. Three months later, Jornimen Zach Page defeated in the interim match. In February 2011, he knocked out Frenchman Steve Erelius (21-1-1), and won the title of interim world champion according to the WBA [2] .
Hernandez vs. Steve Cunningham
On October 1, 2011, Hernandez entered the title fight with IBF world champion Steve Cunningham . In the first round, Hernandez knocked out Cunningham. Due to a strong cut in Hernandez's bout, the fight was stopped in the sixth round. A technical victory on points was awarded to the Cuban. A rematch was scheduled for February 2012. The Cuban was much more active, twice sent Cunningham to the knockdown in the sixth round, and won the match on points [3] .
Hernandez vs. Troy Ross
In September 2012, in a very difficult battle, he defeated the mandatory challenger, Canadian Troy Ross . Hernandez was considered an undeniable favorite, but Ross gave the champion the hardest fight of his career. On November 23, 2013, Hernandez knocked out a mandatory challenger, Russian Alexander Alekseev . After this fight, Alekseev completed his sports career.
Fight against Firat Arslan
On August 16, 2014 in Erfurt, Hernandez defended his title against an age boxer, former world champion, 43-year-old Turk Firat Arslan . The fight began with the usual pressure from Arslan, who, having closed his arms tightly, pressed the champion to the ropes. Hernandez responded with a hail of attacks on the defense of Arslan, but later Arslan began to increase momentum. By the middle of the fight, the picture of the battle was obvious, the challenger finally got used to it and worked as the first number, round after round defeated the champion, pinching Hernandez in the corner and punching right in the head. Hernandez tried to snap, but there was no more strength in his blows. Arslan, deciding that he was winning, slowed down and allowed Hernandez to feel more comfortable. In the final rounds, the tired Hernandez stopped boxing and went to the clinch, constantly hanging on Arslan.
After the end of 12 rounds, Arslan looked fresher than the beaten champion, and triumphantly threw up his hands. However, the judges awarded Hernandez a victory by a separate decision. Thus, Hernandez defended his champion title, and Arslan was again condemned in Germany [5] .
On September 26, 2015, due to an injury, Hernandez was unable to enter the battle against Victor Ramirez and announced the end of his sports career [6] .
