Gameplay

According to the text on the game box, Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing is a truck race ( truck saddle train ) in which rival drivers compete for the right to deliver illegal cargo to their destination, avoiding police cars. From the game menu, you can choose one of four trucks and one of five tracks; if the game functioned correctly, the gameplay would be a trip to a race with an AI controlled opponent. However, the opponent's truck in the release version of the game does not move at all [1] ; later the developer released a patch for the game - in the patched version, the opponent slowly goes to the finish line [2] . There is no cargo, no police cars in the game [1] [3] . All control in Big Rigs is carried out by four cursor keys on the keyboard [1] ; it is impossible to adjust the control in any way [2] . There are no obstacles in the game and in principle there is no collision detection ; A car driven by a player can drive over rocks at any inclination without losing speed, pass through objects and travel outside the game world [1] . Truck and gaming models are very primitive; A separate reason for the mockery of observers were brake lights, separated from the model of the truck and following it at some distance [2] .

The player wins the race automatically, having reached the finish line, after which the grammatically incorrect inscription “YOU'RE WINNER” [1] appears; in a later version of the game, it was corrected to a more correct “YOU WIN” [3] . In some cases, because of a bug, a message about a victory can be received at the very beginning of a race, even without starting to move [4] : after “victory” has been reached on one of the tracks, the player receives the same message simply by selecting any other track from menu [5] . At the same time, only four tracks were available in the release version of the game, and the fifth choice from the menu ended with an immediate departure from the game [3] - according to a satirical review by Mikhail Kalinchenkov from AG.ru , this route is “laid across the Windows desktop” [2] . When moving backwards, you can accelerate to any speed - this allows you to "pass" the game as soon as possible; in 2015, Alex Navarro, the author of a review of GameSpot , at the Games Done Quick event, went through the game in 3 minutes 21 seconds [5] . Any sound or musical accompaniment in the release version of the game was missing; in a later version, the sound of the engine was added [2] .

Development and release of the game

On the aggregator site, Metacritic Big Rigs has an average rating of 8/100 [8] . In the review of Alex Navarro for GameSpot, it was stated that Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing is so bad that it "manages to overcome almost all the limits set by the worst of the worst games," as far as it can be understood; that with all the efforts the player cannot play in Big Rigs in the way that the developer apparently intended, and if it were possible, it is unlikely that anyone would want it [1] . For many years, Big Rigs was the lowest rated game on GameSpot with a rating of “1.0 (Abysmal)” and was the only one of all reviewed games that had such an assessment; only in 2013, the same rating was put to the game Ride to Hell: Retribution [12] AG.ru Observer Mikhail Kalinchenkov mockingly called the experience of playing in Big Rigs “invaluable”, he said that it was even worse than “ Boomer: Tower Blasts ”, and, commenting on the release of the patch for the game, noted “we were finally convinced: this is not a nightmare or an alpha version” [2] . As noted by Hunter Skipuort from The Daily Telegraph , Big Rigs is one continuous bug , and it's more fun not to try to get past it, but to pinch one button and watch the game fall apart by itself [4] . In the X-Play: Get Into Videogaming Mania television program, released on the American G4 channel dedicated to computer games, the game was shown under the heading “Games that shouldn't be bought” without rating, “because our rating scale is not zero,” and is characterized as “ without a doubt, the worst computer game that has ever been released " [11] . In the review of The Angry Video Game Nerd, it was stated that although this game does not cause such negative emotions as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the “worst game in the world” according to The Angry Video Game Nerd , Big Rigs is the worst game in history “in terms of functionality” [3] .

In 2014, Alex Carlson, a Hardcore Gamer 101 columnist, devoted an article comparing Big Rigs and another, also extremely negatively rated game Ride to Hell: Retribution (2013), also referred to in the press as “the worst computer game in history”, and stated that if Ride to Hell: Retribution can still be called bad, but still a game, then Big Rigs have no right to call it that at all - “this is not a game. This is some kind of broken mechanism that will be immortalized forever in the minds of players as one of the most hopelessly flawed samples of technology ever released in a game format ” [13] . Steven Strom from Ars Technica described the game as a “failure of creative abilities” of its creators, likened it to “poetry skipped through Google Translator ” and made the following comparison: if even in the worst game you can find how to entertain yourself, like a child playing with an empty cardboard box, Big Rigs looks more like a flat sheet of cardboard with which nothing can be done [14] .

The game was placed in the selection of the “30 worst games in history” by The Guardian , where it was named “legendary” [15] . She won first place in the list of the 100 worst games of all time, compiled by GamesRadar [16] .
