Biography

Joseph Adolf von Arks was born on February 10, 1922 in the commune of Niederbuchsiten in the Canton of Solothurn in Switzerland. In 1942 he graduated from the school of Niederbuchsiten and entered the Swiss Federal Technical Institute in Zurich . Arks received a degree in biology, then began to study ascomycetes of the genus Mycosphaerella to write a doctoral dissertation. During this time, he worked as an assistant to Professor Ernst Goiman at the Institute. In 1947, he worked for some time with Franz Petrac at the Vienna Museum of Natural History. In 1948, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy . In his dissertation, Arks described the life cycles of many species of the genus Mycosphaerella , and also identified several related species from Mycosphaerella tassiana . Since 1949, von Arks worked at the Phytopathological Institute in Barna ( Netherlands ). In 1957, Arks published Revision der zu Gloeosporium gestellten Pilze , revising the taxonomy of the genus Gloeosporium . In 1963, Joseph von Arks was appointed director of the Netherlands Central Bureau of Mushroom Crops . In 1972, he began to publish the journal Studies in Mycology , until 1985 he was its chief editor. Joseph Adolf von Arks died on April 13, 1988 after a long illness.
