Second Edition
Accepted abbreviation - MGG2. The second (completely revised) edition, in 29 volumes, edited by Ludwig Finscher , was published by the publishers Berenreiter (Bärenreiter-Verlag, Kassel ) and Metzler (J.-B.-Metzler-Verlag, Stuttgart ) in 1994— 2008 years. The encyclopedia is divided into a subject part (Sachteil, 9 volumes) and personnel (Personenteil, 17 volumes). Glossary of terms contains about 1,500 entries, personalities - about 18,000 entries. Additional 3 volumes (Register, Supplement) contain various pointers, corrections of noticed typos, as well as updated data on the list of previously printed articles.
Despite the fact that in 2014 MGG2 is the world's largest and most modern specialized encyclopedia of music, the quality of the articles (factology, the preference of the “individual look” of the author of an objective statement of the term / concept, typo, etc.) is criticized by modern researchers. Some of them are inclined to consider MGG2 as a degradation of the previous (better, more thorough and objective) MGG1 [1] .
In 2017, the electronic (online) version of MGG2 was launched . Paid access to the encyclopedia is provided to organizations (schools, libraries, etc.) and individual subscribers [2] .

The destructive criticism of M. Harras’s article “Notes inégales” in MGG2 ends with a characteristic passage: “This is deeply regrettable, since the new version of such an authoritative publication, which was (and still is) an encyclopedia, did not have to expect anything like that” ( op. cit., p. 283). - ↑ The cost of an annual individual subscription is $ 195 ( information as of June 2019).
