Story

Someone brings together four talented magicians - Daniel Atlas ( Jesse Eisenberg ), Henley Reeves ( Isla Fisher ), Merritt McKinney ( Woody Harrelson ) and Jack Wilder ( David Franco ) - in the same apartment with drawings of an unprecedented scam. A year later, under the pseudonym Four Horsemen, they perform in Las Vegas under the auspices of the millionaire Arthur Tressler ( Michael Kane ). In the final performance, they invite a client of a certain French bank from the audience and promise to transfer him to his bank. During the focus, the bank’s client disappears, and the audience sees on the screen that he was transferred to the vault with the money and turned on the air duct, which sucked 3.2 million euros and poured them into the auditorium.

FBI agent Dylan Rhodes ( Mark Ruffalo ) and Interpol agent Alma Dray ( Melanie Laurent ) are assigned to investigate the robbery. They arrest magicians, but cannot prove their involvement in the loss of money. Later they meet with Thaddeus Bradley ( Morgan Freeman ), a former magician, and now the presenter of the program to expose the illusionists. Bradley shows agents how the “Riders” turned the robbery through tricks and manipulations, but refuses to help them so that he can expose the illusionists on his own.

The next performance of The Four Horsemen takes place in New Orleans . Tressler is trying to bribe Bradley, but to no avail. In the final issue of The Riders, they show that the money stolen from Tressler’s accounts comes to the accounts of spectators due to the fact that his insurance company refused to pay compensation to the victims for the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina . Rhodes is trying to arrest the Riders, but they are escaping with the help of mesmerized spectators. Agent Drey later tells Rhodes about a secret society of magicians called the Eye, which uses illusion to help ordinary people. Tressler, angry at the loss of fortune, hires Bradley to expose and humiliate the Four Horsemen.

The FBI takes refuge in the Riders in New York . During the assault, Rhodes collides with Wilder, after the fight, he escapes in a car, but in the ensuing pursuit his car turns over and explodes. Rhodes finds a document with which he finds out about the main goal of the illusionists - a warehouse with a safe, inside of which 500 million dollars of unpaid taxes of one company, which is followed by another FBI team. The FBI manages to intercept the safe, after which its agents go to the place of the next performance of the "Riders" - 5 Pointz . Opening the safe, agents see that it is not money, but balloons.

In the meantime, the remaining Riders are performing, but FBI agents are on their heels. Riders jump from the roof and disappear, and stolen money falls on the audience. However, the money turns out to be fake - on them are portraits of the Riders. Bradley returns to his car and sees that it is packed with stolen millions. He is being arrested as an accomplice. Rhodes comes into his cell and remains alone with him in a closed cell. Bradley says he was framed. Hoping to reduce the time, he explains how the Riders stole the safe and did other tricks, including the fake death of Jack Wilder. However, he is surprised how the Riders managed to trick the FBI. It dawns on him that for this they needed a man who could keep the FBI away from the Riders. “For example, being“ inside, ”Rhodes prompts. Bradley turns around and sees Rhodes standing behind the bars of the camera. Rhodes is the "fifth horseman" who secretly hired a four and gave them instructions, all this time making sure that the FBI agents do not keep up with them. He leaves Bradley in the cell and leaves. Meanwhile, the three Riders come to the park, where Wilder meets them. They discover a monument tree dedicated to the once great illusionist Lionel Shrike. The Tarot cards that the Horsemans have received are added to the same card with the Oka symbol, and with its help they turn on the carousel nearby. Approaching the carousel, they meet Rhodes, who initiates their entry into the Eye.

While in Paris, Drey reads a newspaper and discovers Rhodes next to him. She immediately suspects that Rhodes is the son of Shrike, who has been planning revenge for the death of his father during the trick all these years. Bradley exposed Shrike, forcing him to perform this perilous trick; Tressler and a Paris bank refused to pay Shrike's insurance policy; the company, from which the safe with money was stolen, made a deliberately unreliable safe for focus, which is why Shrike died. Dray decides not to betray Rhodes.
