Song Story

According to David McGee, author of the book “Go, Cat, Go! The Life and Times of Carl Perkins, the King of Rockabilly, the original recording of the song was composed as follows:

  • Carl Perkins - lead guitar, lead vocals
  • Jay Perkins - rhythm guitar, hears
  • Clayton Perkins - Bass
  • V.S. Holland - drums

When Karl Perkins first showed this song to his brother Jay, he extremely disliked the unusual choice of the chord - after the E major triad instead of the usual bluesy sequence in A major, the song sounded a major major seventh chord. Despite Jay’s protests, Carl managed to convince his brother that this made the song unusual. Today, this sequence of chords is considered one of the most interesting aspects of the song.

Perkins and his band performed this song on their first televised speech on March 17, 1956.

Note

  1. ↑ The name of the song is a play on words. The English trade "honey-do" is a comic notation for those tasks that wives usually give their husbands. The expression "honey don't" thus means something like "Something you can't do expensive / expensive."
