Biography
Muni Sudekoff started playing the trombone at the age of 13. His academic musical education was limited to several months of study at the New York Institute of Musical Arts, now known as the Juilliard School , under the direction of Ernest Clark. The trombonist played in many different jazz groups, first in small ensembles, and then in big bands . In 1938, he began performing in the big band Tommy Dorsey . At this time, the musician changed his real name to the stage name Muni Morrow, and then Buddy Morrow.
During World War II, Buddy Morrow served on the U.S. Navy . After demobilization, he continued to play in the Tommy Dorsey orchestra, and then, in 1951, organized his own orchestra. In the 1950s, Morrow composed his most famous tunes: such as Big Beat , Memphis Drag , Midnight March , Old Potato Farm and others. In 1976, he became the lead singer and conductor (bandleader) of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and remained in this post until the end of his life. In 2009, Buddy Morrow received the International Trombonist Association Award for Lifetime Achievement. His last public appearance with Tommy Dorsey’s orchestra took place on September 24, 2010 a few days before the musician’s death.
