Match Review

Celtic participated in the finals in the status of the current holder of the League Cup , the Rangers , in turn, was the reigning champion of Scotland . For the first time in the decisive bout, Old Firm clubs came together. The match itself was held under a cloudless sunny sky on October 19, 1957 .

The first twenty minutes of the meeting were played with a big advantage, “Celtic”, “Celts” attacked a lot, twice dangerously hit the goalkeeper Rangers George Niven . The first goal took place on the 22nd minute of the match - inside the “white-green” Sammy Wilson after a pass by Charlie Tully sent the ball to the goal. Protection "Jersey" recovered from such a strike, and until the end of the first half, bravely restrained the attacks of the "Celts". However, in the 44th minute, Celtic winger Neal Mohan made a solo pass from his left flank, on the way beating several opponents, and thrust the ball into the far lower corner of the Rangers goal. After the break, the white-green extravaganza continued. Eight minutes after the start of the second half, Billy McPhail, with the filing of Bobby Collins, brought the score to big. Five minutes later, Jersey player Billy Simpson managed to score one ball. However, this event served only as a “catalyst” for even more active actions of the “Celts” in the attack. In the next 17 minutes, “doubles” issued MacPhail and Mohan, respectively.

At the 80th minute, MacPhail scored his third goal in the match, it is noteworthy that all the goals were scored by the center forward. When the minute hand was making its last ninetieth lap, Billy was shot down in the penalty area by the Rangers. McPhail refused to beat the penalty . Having scored the fourth goal, the forward could set a record in the “Old Firm” derby matches in the number of balls in one match. The penalty kick undertook to perform Willy Fernie and was accurate - 7: 1. For such a victory, the management of Celtic allowed the players to keep their T-shirts as a keepsake, which was very rare at the time [8] .

Rangers fans dispelled all their rage for a similar result on football players, accusing them of lack of will. Players of “Celtic” in post-match interviews said that the outcome of the game was predetermined by the uncertain actions of the central midfielder “Jersey” Valentine and goalkeeper Niven. In particular, Bobby Collins stated:

I do not know who is to blame from rivals in such a defeat. But it seems to me that the Jersey players, and most of all, Valentine, did not believe their goalkeeper. And Niven did not believe in Valentine, nor in all his other teammates. But these are only external conclusions. The result is one - today we defeated the Rangers [8] .

After the final duel, various newspapers came out with screaming headlines: The Times daily called the game “a magnificent exhibition of football” [1] , their counterparts from The Sunday Post - “The October Revolution” [8] . The victory of Celtic in this meeting today remains the largest among all the decisive meetings of the British professional cups [2] , and it is the same in the history of the Old Firm derby.

Song

In the summer of 1957, the film “Island in the Sun” ( English Island in the Sun ) was released on European movie screens. The title song to him was the song of the same name performed by Harry Belafonte . The motif quickly became popular in the UK, reaching the fifth line of the “ UK Singles Chart ” [9] . Fans of Celtic turned the song, replacing the words, and soon Hampden in the Sun sounded at the matches of the Glazgovs, as a reminder of an impressive victory [3] [4] . The phrase itself became the designation of the final of 1957 and was used in other songs and verses [5] [6] . The release of the eponymous book at the end of the same year elevated Hampden in the Sun to the category of one of the Celtic symbols [7] .

Hampden in the Sun ( Rus. "Hampden" in the sun )

Oh Hampden in the sun, Celtic 7 Rangers 1,
The Timalloys had won the cup [10] .

He slips the ball past Valentine,
It's nodded down by Teazy Weazy [11] , And Sammy Wilson makes it look so easy.

Chorus

I see Mochan beating Shearer, The League Cup is coming nearer,
The Rangers team has had their lot.

Chorus

McPhail above comes all,
The ball is in the net.

Chorus

Young Sam Wilson has them rocked, But unluckily his shot was blocked,
Makes it look like this easy job.

Chorus

He runs around Ian McColl,
Wee George Niven takes a daring, But Smiler Mochan makes it number five.

Chorus

Billy McPhail Down With The Middle Runs,
The safe and sound [12] .

Chorus

Here comes amnie, cool and slick, He ambles up to take the kick,
He Timing, Heaven.
