Franz's father was Prince Alexander of Hesse-Darmstadt , brother of the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna . He married Julia von Hauke in 1851 . Alexander's brother, the Grand Duke of Hesse, Ludwig III, gave Julia the title of Countess Battenberg for her and her descendants, who would not be able to claim the Hessian throne.
