Life

Daughter of the 11th Duke of Hamilton and Baden Princess Mary Amelia . Thanks to her maternal grandmother, Stephanie Beauharnais , she was the fourth cousin of Emperor Napoleon III , the cousin of Queen of Saxony Carola of Sweden , the Portuguese Queen Stefania of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen , King of Romania Carol I and Maria Hohenzollern-Sigolmingen -mother of Algelgering.

On September 21, 1869, she married Crown Prince of Monaco Albert , son of Prince Charles of Monaco Charles III and Antoinette de Merod-Westerlo . Maria Victoria in marriage gave birth to the only son of Louis, the future Prince of Monaco, Louis II . January 3, 1880, their marriage was dissolved.

On June 2, 1880, she entered into a second marriage with Count Tassilo Festetić von Tolna (1850-1933; from 1911, the prince). They had four children:

  • Maria Matilda (1881-1951), married Prince Carl Emil zu Furstenberg (1867-1945);
  • György (1882-1941), wife - Countess Maria von Haugwitz (1900-1972);
  • Alexandra (1884-1963), her husband was Prince Karl Otto zu Windischgrets (1871-1915), and after - Prince Erwin zu Hohenlohe- Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst (1890-1951);
  • Carola Frederic (1888-1951), spouse - Oscar, Baron Gauch von Frankenturn (1879-1958).

For 40 years of marriage to Count Tassio, Lady Maria led the expansion and improvement of her husband's possessions. Maria’s great friend was her brother William Douglas-Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton, who in turn was a great friend of the Prince of Wales (future King Edward VII ). Lady Maria died in 1922 . She and her husband were buried in the Festetics mausoleum near Lake Balaton .
