On July 5, 1997, at the stadium of the University of Latvia, a football match of the Intertoto Cup group stage was held between the Riga University and the Bremen Werder [1] . From 1999 to 2008, the stadium was the home arena of the football club " Riga ".
In 2000, the stadium was transferred to the ownership of the Riga City Council [2] , and in 2008, experts decided that the stadium did not meet safety requirements [3] .
On January 31, 2012, the Riga City Council transferred the stadium of the University of Latvia to the Latvian Football Federation , with the condition of reconstructing the stadium into a modern sports base that would meet all the requirements of FIFA and UEFA and where they could hold matches of the Latvian national football team [4] . It was assumed that the construction of a new stadium will end by May 2017 [5] .
However, due to lack of funding, construction work did not begin, and in July 2016 this project was declared invalid [6] . It soon became known that a multi-functional sports complex without spectator stands would be built on the site of the stadium [7] . Construction work began in March 2017, the first stage of the new sports complex was opened in June of the same year, and the full opening took place on September 16, 2017.
