Story

The plot of the game boils down to the fact that three friends - the owners of a toy store, a villain named Gamma ( English Gamma ) stole all their toys and intends to destroy the friends themselves by the next step. Friends have no choice but to set off in search of the stolen and fight the villain Gamma.

Gameplay

Toy Shop Boys is a typical two-dimensional shooter with vertical scrolling (scrolling shooter), made in a cartoon style and gameplay reminiscent of games such as TwinBee or Sapo Xule: SOS Lagoa Poluida . The player, controlling three friends (flying without the help of any devices), must go through a number of levels, destroying the enemies on the way and dodging retaliatory shots and collisions.

Frame from the first level of the game

The owners of the busted toy store fly in a friendly three - one in front and two behind, next to each other. Each of them has a unique weapon, one - shoots fire charges, the second - boomerangs, the third - twists a kind of laser sword. Each weapon has its pros and cons: boomerangs themselves are aimed at the target, but they do the least damage, fire charges are more powerful weapons, but they fire only in front of you, and the sword has a minimal radius of destruction, but it can destroy any enemy shots (bullets, laser beams, rockets, etc.) and causes maximum damage.

If a troika of friends misses an enemy shot or collides with one of the enemies, the game life is lost and the current level has to be re-run. In addition, all accumulated bonuses disappear - improved weapons and increased speed of the main characters. To improve weapons and speed, it is necessary to collect special bonus items that drop out of some enemies or from boxes scattered around the levels of the bow. In addition to improved weapons and speed, this way you can get a special shield that can withstand two hits. All the enemies in the game are greatly enlarged toys - plastic soldiers, toy tanks and planes, rubber ducks, balls, etc.

In total, the game consists of six stages that do not have their own names. At the end of each of the first five levels, the player will meet with the "boss" - a particularly strong opponent. Like other enemies, the “bosses” are enlarged toys - racing cars, a teddy bear, etc. In the last level, the player must take turns to fight each of the “bosses” of the previous stages, and in the end - the main antagonist of the game.

Criticism

  • In the German game magazine Play Time ( de ) in the June 1991 issue, the game received a very high rating of 95%, including 92% for graphic design, 83% for music and sound effects, 78% for gameplay and 95% for matching game quality its price. According to the magazine reviewer, the game is no different from other representatives of the genre. At the same time, both the graphic design of the game and the musical accompaniment and sound effects were positively evaluated [2] .
