Biography

Born in St. Petersburg on November 20, 1862 , the son of a court counselor .

Educated at the 3rd St. Petersburg Military Gymnasium, after which on September 1, 1881 he was enrolled in the Mikhailovsky Artillery School .

Released on August 14, 1884, as a second lieutenant to the 1st Reserve Artillery Brigade; on August 7, 1886, he was promoted to lieutenant . In 1892, Volodchenko successfully passed the entrance exams to the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff , from where byd was released in 1892 according to the 1st category, and on May 6, 1892 he was promoted to headquarters captain for his achievements in science. Appointed to be at the headquarters of the Vilna Military District .

On November 26, 1892 he was appointed senior adjutant of the headquarters of the 2nd Cavalry Division , on April 17, 1894 he was promoted to captain . From October 1, 1897 to October 1, 1894, the squadron qualified command passed in the 6th Pavlogradsky Life-Dragoon Regiment . Produced as Lieutenant Colonel Volodchenko on April 18, 1899, he was at the same time appointed senior adjutant to the headquarters of the Vilna Military District, and from January 16, 1901 he was the head officer for assignments under the command of the troops of the Vilna Military District. From May 9 to November 9, 1902 he was seconded to the 6th Life Dragoon Pavlograd Regiment to familiarize himself with the general requirements of the management and conduct of the regimental economy. On July 20, 1902 he was appointed chief of staff of the 2nd Cavalry Division and on April 6 of the following year promoted to colonel .

After the outbreak of the war with Japan, Volodchenko went to the army, where he was the head of the stages of the 2nd Manchu army. For the battles at the villages of Maturan and Madepu he was awarded the Order of St. 4th degree Vladimir with swords and a bow and Golden weapons with the inscription "For courage . "

At the end of hostilities, Volodchenko was transferred to the Separate Border Guard Corps on October 27, 1905 and was appointed to the post of chief of staff of the Zaamursky District OKPS. July 14, 1909 promoted to major general .

Before the outbreak of the First World War , during mobilization, Volodchenko was appointed brigade commander of the 3rd Don Cossack Division on August 2, 1914, in November battles he commanded this division. Since April 26, 1915 he was the commander (later chief) of the 16th cavalry division. During the Battle of Gorlitsky and the breakthrough of the Austro-German forces, General A. von Mackensen at Tarnow in April 1915 led the combined cavalry corps of the 3rd Army.

For military distinctions, on June 16, 1915 he was promoted to lieutenant general (with seniority of November 24, 1914). By the highest order of May 19, 1915, Volodchenko was awarded the Order of St. George 4th degree

 For the outstanding decisiveness, courage and selflessness rendered during his command of the third Don Cossack Division, as part of the combined cavalry corps, in battles from November 4 to 24, 1914 at Gribov, Novyi Sandets, Limanov, Tymbark, Dombra, Porobka, Mount Sv. Yana and Lapanuva, thanks to whom the task assigned to the horse corps was successfully completed. 

April 7, 1917 Volodchenko was appointed commander of the 46th Army Corps. September 9, 1917 replaced General F. E. Ogorodnikov as commander in chief of the armies of the South-Western Front [1] .

The day after the October Revolution, Volodchenko joined the Front Committee for the Salvation of the Revolution. On November 5, he signed the Berdychiv Agreement with the Ukrainian Central Rada , according to which he transferred the rear areas of the front under the control of the Rada, but on November 24 he passed his command, and in December left for Odessa .

In 1919, Volodchenko went to the Far East , was first in the army of the Eastern Front , then chief of the internal security of the CER .

He lived in Harbin , published several articles in the hourly magazine of the largest Russian emigration. On September 24, 1945, he was arrested by SMERSH on charges of anti-Soviet activity and died at the end of the year during the investigation.

According to the conclusion of the Omsk Oblast Prosecutor's Office of November 22, 1999, he was posthumously rehabilitated.

Grandson N.G. Volodchenko - Mikhail Nikolaevich Volodchenko (creative pseudonym - Mikhail Volin) poet and prose writer, co-author of Alexander Vertinsky [2] [3] .
