Biography

Born February 15, 1902 in the village of Melauri, now in the Ambrolaur region of Georgia, in a peasant family. By nationality - Georgians. He graduated from the city school. He worked as a master sawmill. In the Red Army since April 1921. In 1927 he graduated from the Georgian United School of the Transcaucasian Military District for the training of commanders of the Red Army . In the same year he joined the CPSU (b) . In 1932, he took advanced training courses for officers at the All-Russian Central Executive Committee School in Moscow.

Since 1937 - in the service of the Navy . Since June 1941, took part in hostilities.

After the war, he continued to serve in the USSR Navy. July 5, 1946 resigned with the rank of colonel. He lived in Tbilisi . He worked as chairman of the DOS-FLOT committee of the Georgian SSR. He died on January 10, 1973.

History of the Feat

The battalion of the 7th Marine Brigade took part in the defense of the city of Sevastopol . In early November 1941, the battalion under the command of Captain Gegeshidze skillfully covered the retreat of Soviet troops; in mid-January 1942, he blocked the way for German troops trying to break through the Soviet line of defense; in June 1942 took part in heavy offensive battles.

Rewards

October 23, 1942 by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR A. S. Gegeshidze was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 717. He was also awarded two Orders of the Red Banner and various medals.
