Orpheline, Zachariah

Zachary Orfelin ( Serb. Zakhariј Orfelin , real name is Stefanovich ) is a Serbian polymatist , poet, writer and historian. He is known for being the first to print books in Serbian [5] and to publish the first magazine among the Southern Slavs - “Slavic-Serbian Store”. [6]

Biography

Orfelin was born in 1726 in Vukovar . He received little primary education, studied painting and engraving in Venice . Orfelin wandered throughout his life and lived in poverty, feeding only on literary income. [5] For some period he worked as a teacher and an official . [6] Since 1757 he was secretary of the metropolitan Pavel Nenadovich Sremski-Karlovtsi . In 1768, Orfelin published the Slavonic-Serbian Store magazine in Venice, which called for the creation of literature in the national language. [7] In the introduction to the “store”, the writer praises the new age, which makes it possible to spread knowledge among the people. [5] Orfelin died on January 19, 1785 in Novi Sad .

Creativity and Works

Orfelin's activity is inspired by the ideas of freedom and independence. [5] He expressed the desire of the Serbian people for independence in the poems “Woeful Weeping ...” (1761, Venice) and “Weeping in Serbia, even her sons dispersed to various states” (1763, Venice). His Odes and Melodies, written on patriotic themes and containing the idea of ​​liberating Serbia, are also known. He also wrote theological works.

From the historical works of Orfelin, books about Peter I and Catherine II are known. Peter I was the ideal of Orfelin [5] , a work dedicated to him was published in 1772 under the title “ Life and Glorious Deeds of Emperor Peter the Great , autocrat of the whole Russian. With the appendix of a brief geographical and political history of the Russian kingdom ”with a list of sources used. This is the first South Slavic work dedicated to Peter. [7] The book was reprinted under the editorship of Mikhail Shcherbatov in St. Petersburg in 1774 . [7] In the same year, Orfelin published an essay on Catherine II. Orfelin's followers in introducing the national Serbian language were Dositi Obradovic and Vuk Karadzic . [6]
