Biography
Denis Wick began to practice trombone on his own at the age of 10 years. He received his musical education at the Royal Academy of Music in London . Wick's first place of work was the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra , in which he played the part of the second trombone. From 1952 to 1957 he was a soloist of the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra . In 1957, Denis Wick became the soloist of the London Symphony Orchestra . He worked in this position for more than 30 years, and retired in 1988, after which Ian Bousfield took the vacant place of a trombonist soloist.
In parallel with his work at the London Symphony Orchestra, Denis Wick performed for some time as a member of the London Symphonyette chamber orchestra and the Philip Jones ensemble . He also performed regularly solo. Especially for Wick, trombone concerts of British composers Gordon Jacob , Buxton Orr and Alan Hoddinott were written.
Denis Wick also acts as a conductor, working in this role mainly with brass and youth orchestras. In the 1970s, a record of the London Brass Band under his management was awarded several awards. Since 1967, Wick taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Theater . In 1976, he left teaching in the trombone class, but continued to conduct the school’s orchestra. Since 2002, Dennis Wick has been teaching at the Royal Academy of Music.
Currently, Denis Wick has stopped performing as a trombonist, but continues to conduct, teach and give master classes. In 1989, he received an award from the International Association of Trombonists . Denis Wick is the owner of Denis Wick Products Ltd , a manufacturer of brass instrument accessories and Denis Wick Publishing . His book on trombone technique has survived 5 editions and has been translated into 4 languages.
Interesting Facts
- As part of the London Symphony Orchestra, Denis Wick participated in recording soundtracks for the original Star Wars trilogy and films about Indiana Jones [1] .
