World War I

  • Formed in July 1918. Moved to France on the Western Front in July 1918, as part of the 1st American Army, General Pershing took part in the Mez-Aragon operation. Disbanded in June 1919.

World War II

  • Formed on November 25, 1940 in San Antonio , Texas .
  • Composition: 141, 142, 143rd Infantry Regiments ; 155th (Wednesday), 131, 132, 133th (Leg.) Field artillery battalions .
  • Campaigns: North Africa (April - May 1943), Italy (September 1943 - July 1944) September 9, 1943 landed in Salerno . Participated in the battle of Monte Cassino . August 15, 1944 landed in southern France as part of Operation Dragoon . In May 1945, in Austria, soldiers of the 36th Division were captured by Field Marshal Gerd von Runstedt .
