Gospel of ebon

The Gospel of Ebbon is a handwritten Gospel , an outstanding monument of medieval book art.

Description

The "Gospel of Ebbon" was created at the direction of the Archbishop of Reims Ebbon (778–851) and is a striking historical and artistic monument of the Carolingian Renaissance . The text of this work begins with a dedication to the customer, Archbishop Ebbon. It is written in Latin.

The Ebbon Gospel was created around 825 in Reims, or at the bookstore of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Pierre-d'Auilleur in Ovillera (near Epernay ), where the Utrecht Psalter was written and illustrated around the same time. The images of the evangelists in the Gospel of Ebbon are very similar to the illustrations made in the Psalms, which allows us to conclude that one painter worked on both manuscripts. Both books represent the heyday of the so-called. Carolingian Reims Art School.

Before 835, Archbishop Ebbon presented the Gospel to Oville Abbey. Currently, the manuscript is stored in the city library of Épernay (Signatur Ms. 1).
