Sheli Rachel Jachimowich (in some sources Ehimowich or Yechimowich ) ( Hebrew שלי רחל יחימוביץ ; born March 28, 1960 , Kfar ) - Israeli politician, journalist and writer. Member of the Knesset since 2006 ( 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 convocations). A member from 2006 and the leader of the Avoda party from 2011 to November 2013, she held the post of Opposition Leader in the Knesset of the 17th 18th convocations and from January 1, 2019 - in the Knesset of the 20th convocation.

Biography

Born March 28, 1960 in the city of Kfar Saba . Mother is a teacher, father is a builder, repatriates from Poland who survived in the Holocaust . Sooner became socially-politically active, at the age of 15 she was expelled from the Baruch Ostrovsky school in Raanan for public criticism of its director.

Journalistic Activities

In 1985, she graduated from the Department of Journalism at Ben-Gurion University . During her studies, she began working as a reporter for the newspaper Al Ha-Mishmar.

After graduation, until 2000, she worked at the radio station Kol Israel . There she was the host of such programs as the economic program “Color of Money”, as well as the popular TV show “Hakol Diburim” (“Everything is Talk”), where Jáchimovic and his colleague Carmela Menashe provided an opportunity to express the views of the organization “Four Mothers”.

After leaving Kohl Israel in 2000, she began working on the second channel of Israeli television , where she hosted the “Meeting with Journalists” program and the personal section “Gilui Daat” (“Expression of Opinion”) in the program “Ulpan Shishi” (“Friday Studio” "). In this section, Jáchymović presented alternative economic comments, revealed the connections between power and capital. She also led a weekly program on the army radio channel Galei Tsahal .

Political activities

In 2005, she joined the Avoda party , which supports social-democratic positions. The entry took place shortly after the election of Amir Peretz as the leader of this party. After that, Jachimovic stated that she would only engage in political activities.

According to the results of the 2006 elections to the 17th Knesset, she was elected as a deputy on the list of this party. In 2009, re-elected. In the Knesset, she showed herself to be a supporter of state regulation of the economy, a defender of the working class.

Ehud Barak , the leader of Avoda in 1997-2001 and 2007-2011, left the party in 2011 and created his own Atzmaut party, as a result of which Avoda needed a new leader.

In 2011, Yakhimovich nominated herself for the post of party chairman. As a result of the first round, the primaries, which took place on September 12, 2011, Jakhimovich and Peretz went to the second round, and the first won the first round with a margin of 1% (32% and 31%, respectively). On September 21 of the same year, Jachimovic won in the second round with a result of 53% of the vote (Peretz has 46%). Thus, she took over as party chairman.

After the election, she called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to support the creation of a Palestinian state and to do everything possible to sign peace agreements with the regime of Mahmoud Abbas as soon as possible.

On May 9, 2012 , after the Kadima party joined the ruling coalition, she took the post of Opposition Leader in the Knesset [1] .

In the 19th Knesset elections, the Avoda party, led by Jáchymovic, increased its representation in parliament by 7 seats. Despite this, at the November 2013 internal party elections, Jáchimović lost the post of party chairman Yitzhak Herzog , for whose candidacy 58.5% of the party members voted [2] .

After the bloc was disbanded, the Zionist camp was again appointed as the leader of the opposition on January 1, 2019 [3] .

Jachimovic has two children: son Gal and daughter Rama.
