Biography

Family and Early Years

Yakov Sergeyevich Shumakov was born on November 5, 1919 in the village of Gorbunovka, Dmitrovsky district, Orel province, in the family of a peasant Sergei Petrovich Shumakov and his wife Vera Mikhailovna Shumakova. Russian nationality. In addition to Jacob, the family had 2 more sons: Dmitry (1915-1985) and Valentine (1925-2005), who also participated in the Great Patriotic War. Also involved in the war was the uncle of Yakov Sergeyevich - Ivan Petrovich Shumakov, who was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and the medal "For Courage" . Ya. S. Shumakov studied at the regional school "Agrotechnics", then worked at the distillery in the neighboring village of Solomino .

Military Service

In 1939, he was called up by the Dmitrovsky RVK for active military service in the Red Army . He graduated from the artillery regimental school. Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. He fought on the Western , Bryansk , Central , Belorussian , 1st Belorussian fronts .

On the Western Front, he participated in heavy defensive battles on the territory of Belarus east of Mogilev ; on the Bryansk Front, as the Red Army soldier of the mortar company of the 409th Infantry Regiment of the 137th Infantry Division as part of the 3rd Army - in offensive battles from January to the second half of March 1942 in the region of Mtsensk and to its north-west in the Bolkhovsky District of the Oryol Region (battles for the settlements of Chegodaevo, Krivtsovo, Fatievo, on the Berezuyka river). In 1943 he joined the CPSU (b) .

In February - March 1943, on the Bryansk Front, as part of the 48th Army, he participated in offensive battles in the Oryol Region as a gun commander of the 17th artillery regiment. In these battles, the cannon of Y. S. Shumakov destroyed 1 six-barreled mortar, 1 mortar, 7 easel machine guns, an observation post, 2 cars, up to 70 enemy soldiers and officers. Ya. S. Shumakov was awarded the medal “For Courage”.

On the Central Front, as part of the 48th Army, from July 15 to August 18, 1943 he participated in the Oryol offensive operation - an integral part of the Battle of Kursk; Chernihiv-Pripyat offensive operation (August 26 - September 30, 1943). On the Belorussian Front, as part of the 48th Army, he participated in the Gomel-Rechitsa offensive operation (November 10–30, 1943) and subsequent battles in the territory of the Gomel Region. During the battles for the Shacilki station of the Gomel region on the Rechitsa-Parichi railway on January 17, 1944, while in infantry fighting formations under continuous artillery and mortar and machine-gun fire, I found 4 machine-gun points and 1 live-sighting gun, an observation post and a residential a dugout with a garrison there. He reported the coordinates of the targets to the commander, after which they were destroyed by the fire of the battery.

In the battle on January 18, 1944, in the vicinity of the village of Zakletnoye, now in the Gomel region, after strong artillery preparation, the enemy launched a counterattack. Senior sergeant Y. S. Shumakov was wounded in the shoulder with a shrapnel. After dressing up, the battlefield did not leave and continued to adjust the fire. A counterattack was repulsed, 12 soldiers and officers were destroyed, 3 easel machine guns with a servant were defeated. For the difference in these fights, Ya. S. Shumakov was awarded the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree.

On the 1st Belorussian Front, as part of the 48th Army, he participated in offensive operations in Bobruisk (June 24 - 29, 1944), Minsk (June 29 - July 4, 1944) and Lublin-Brest (July 18 - August 2, 1944) stages of the Belarusian strategic offensive operation. During the Lublin-Brest operation, the 48th Army entered the territory of Poland and subsequently fought westward to the Narew River.

He particularly distinguished himself in battles on the outskirts of the Narev River. When counterattacking the enemy’s large tank forces and infantry on September 4, 1944, in the area of ​​the village of Kachka (now the gmina Govorovo , Ostrolenka County , Masovian Voivodeship ), the calculation of his guns destroyed 2 medium tanks. When all the calculation numbers failed, Y. S. Shumakov, taking the place of the gunner, continued to fire until he was mortally wounded.

The title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded on November 18, 1944.

He was buried in the village of Stare Suski of the Ostrow Mazowiecki County of Białystok Voivodeship (Poland). Later, he was reburied in the town of Makow Mazowiecki at the military cemetery along Sportova Street.
