TARDIS [1] ( born TARDIS - T ime A nd R elative D imension (s) I n S pace [2] ) - a time machine and a spaceship from the British television series Doctor Who , which, as a living creature, grew [ 3] on the home planet of the lords of the time, Gallifrey , before moving to the parallel Universe in the Time War . TARDIS can deliver its passengers anywhere in time and space. It could take any form for mimicry, but once this mechanism was broken, and now the Doctor’s TARDIS always looks outside like a police booth of the 1963 model, but inside it is much larger than outside [4] . When taking off and landing, it makes a characteristic, unlike sound (Wroomp Wroomp), however, in the series it was shown that this sound was because the Doctor did not release the brake, when River, his wife, controlled the TARDIS, she did not have this sound .
In the classic series, TARDIS was also called simply “ship”, “capsule” or even “police box”, “blue box”, “blue box”.
Doctor Who has become such a significant part of British pop culture that not only the shape of the blue police booth has become associated with the TARDIS, but also the word “TARDIS” is used to describe something that is more inside than outside. [5] TARDIS is a registered trademark of the BBC [6] .
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the series in New Zealand , a two-dollar coin was issued with the image of the TARDIS [7] [8] [9] [10] .
In July 2013, TARDIS, as well as a cyberman , appeared at London Heathrow Airport [11] .
On Google Maps , there is an Easter egg , consisting in the ability to see the inside of a copy of the TARDIS, standing in London [12] .
In 2015, the Tardis Canyon on Charon was named in her honor (the name has not yet been approved by the International Astronomical Union ).

Appearance History
The TARDIS appears in the very first episode of the series Doctor Who - “The Unearthly Child ”, released in 1963. The doctor claims that he borrowed an obsolete car when he left his home planet . As it turned out in the Doctor 's Name series, the First Doctor was about to take another TARDIS, but under the influence of one of Clara’s versions, Oswald changed his mind. The Fourth Doctor did not agree to replace his car with a newer one, justifying the refusal with a “lack of soul” in the new model. A working TARDIS is capable of disguising itself as a variety of objects (for example, the Master’s car looked like a grandfather clock, a horse van, an iron maiden, a column, a part of a computer, etc.), but she was stuck with the Doctor in the guise of a public police telephone box, as she has a malfunctioning disguise system - literally a “chameleon device” (although in the very first series Susan Forman mentions that she took the form of a Christmas tree and the seat of a sedan). The Sixth Doctor once tried to fix the masking system, and as a result, the TARDIS turned first into a painted column, and then into an organ, and both times were completely out of place. What exactly the malfunction is has never been specified. The TARDIS was already old when the Doctor took it, but how old it is is not clear. The Ninth Doctor claims that he has behind him “900 years of travel in a telephone box,” bearing in mind that his TARDIS is at least so old (and, apparently, even more ancient).
TARDIS device
TARDIS is grown, not produced. They take energy from several sources, but primarily from the core of an artificial black hole [13] , the Eye of Harmony, created by the legendary Time Lord Omega. According to the Doctor , she froze in time. The source of the TARDIS force (“the heart of the TARDIS”) is located under the console, under the central column, the raising and lowering of which indicates that the machine is functioning. Other elements required for the operation of the TARDIS are the rare Zeyton-7 ore and arthron energy. The latter is a form of temporal energy, the discovery of Overlords. Before the TARDIS begins to function fully, it is necessary to combine it with the biology of the Time Lord using the Rassilon device, which provides a symbiotic connection with the TARDIS and the ability to withstand physical stress during time travel. Without this device, molecular disintegration will follow. This ensures that time travel is not abused, even if the TARDIS technology is copied. In the series “ End of Journey ”, the Doctor says: the control is designed for six pilots, and he has to cope alone. The TARDIS Doctors shake violently when moving, however, in the “ Time of the Angels ” series, the River Song controls it smoothly using stabilizers (the Doctor calls them “skukozators,” English boringers ). In addition, the River landed completely silently, explaining that the Doctor forgets to release the parking brake. In response, the Doctor claims that he simply likes the sound. This does not explain the fact that the TARDIS of the Master makes exactly the same sounds, although he controls it much more skillfully than the Doctor. The river also reports that she was trained by the best teacher. We see in the series “ Let's kill Hitler ” how the TARDIS interface teaches her, who, also, had previously communicated with the dying Doctor.
Exterior
The appearance of the police booth remained virtually unchanged, except for some cosmetic changes. For example, the hiding telephone sign on the door changed - instead of black letters on a white background, white on black and white on blue appeared. The spelling of words on the panel also changed: from “Urgent calls” to “All calls”. The sign "Police Box" has not changed since the 18th season (except for the 1996 film). At some point, a first-aid kit appeared on the door, but did not last long.
In most series, the exterior doors of the booth operate separately from the serious interior doors, although sometimes both sets can be opened the same way, allowing passengers to peer out and vice versa. The entrance to the TARDIS is opened and locked from the outside with a key that the Doctor keeps at home, occasionally giving copies to companions. In the 2005 series, the key is also associated with the TARDIS - it is able to signal (by heating and glowing) the presence of the ship or the delay in its arrival. The Tenth , Eleventh , Twelfth Doctor and Thirteenth Doctors are able to open the door with the click of their fingers.
Interior
Even through the doors of the booth you can see that the TARDIS is huge. The capacity was not specified numerically (however, the Doctor mentioned that it was infinite), but the ship accommodates, in addition to residential parts, an art gallery, a library, a swimming pool, a medical compartment, a cricket court (before the Doctor’s Wife series), several warehouses with brick walls , a multi-level dressing room with a spiral staircase, etc. Other rooms include living quarters for Doctor’s companions, and the Doctor’s bedroom was not mentioned or shown. There is also a Zero Room, protected from the rest of the Universe and providing a calm environment. Parts of the TARDIS can be isolated from each other or modified. Some round circles hide TARDIS devices and mechanisms, their design varies from the basics carved on a black background to photographic images printed on the walls and transparent luminous discs in later series. In the Journey to the TARDIS Center series, the Eleventh Doctor says the ship is endless. In the series “ Name of the Doctor ” (season 7, series 14), the Doctor, having discovered a huge TARDIS on the planet Trenzalor , explains this by saying that the TARDIS is dying.
“When the TARDIS dies, sometimes there is a distortion of dimension. This has been called a dimension leak. When more inside begins to appear and outside. ".
From the premises of the ship, the console is most often shown where the control panel is located. In the original series, the TARDIS has at least two control rooms - the main one with white walls, a futuristic look, very often used throughout the history of the series, and the second one, used during the 14th season, is more ancient in appearance, with wooden panels.
Functions
- Moving in space and time.
- Telepathic functions.
- Computer functions.
- Ability to translate all existing languages except Ancient Gallifrey (TARDIS passengers can not only understand all languages, but also speak them; this ability can last a lifetime: in the series “ Angels Take Over Manhattan, ” Rory Williams managed to read the hieroglyphic inscription on a vase, being very far from TARDIS); but there are exceptions: in the series “ Impossible planet ” TARDIS failed to translate the inscription on the fragments of a vase. Also, in the series “ Time of Angels ”, the inscription on the “native box” remains unencrypted until the Doctor translates it himself, since it was written in ancient Gallifrey - “the forgotten language of the Time Lords”.
- Protection against external enemies behind closed doors.
- State of temporal grace - TARDIS automatically makes it impossible to use all types of weapons (an interesting example is given in the story “Spear of Fate”, where the Third Doctor, while inside the TARDIS, catches a spear thrown into it). This state is unstable, and is periodically turned off (for example, in the series “ Let's kill Hitler, ” Mels damages the TARDIS control panel with a shot from a pistol).
- When materializing in a vacuum, the TARDIS creates a field around it that holds the atmosphere. This function is not automatic - in some series, when the doors were opened in a vacuum, air was blown out from the TARDIS.
- Siege regime with external danger. In the Plane series, the train could crush the TARDIS, but the doctor managed to turn on the siege regime. In this mode, the TARDIS turns into a gray cube, you can neither enter nor exit. This mode can be turned on whenever you want, but to turn it off you need a lot of energy.
- Some TARDIS models are military and possess external weapons. All of these models were destroyed by the distant during the Time War.
Living TARDIS
In the episode "The Doctor's Wife," the Eleventh Doctor meets his TARDIS in the guise of a woman. The doctor receives a message from an asteroid called "House." Such a message could be sent only by the Time Lords , and the Doctor goes in search of them, but finds only two strange creatures, oud and a crazy woman named Idris, who calls the Doctor her kidnapper. The doctor understands that the TARDIS matrix has moved to Idris. He likes that he can talk with his beloved car, but the woman’s body is not able to withstand the flow of energies characteristic of the TARDIS for a long time, and the matrix returns to the car body. The doctor calls the TARDIS "old woman" and "sexy", she will forever remain his faithful friend, but those days when they could talk, apparently, will not repeat again [14] [15] [16] . Subsequently, the Doctor tried in vain to establish voice contact with the TARDIS, and they always had telepathic contact. In some series, the TARDIS voice interface was shown, which is based on the Doctor's memoirs and appears in the form of people who played a special role in his life.
The actress who played the live embodiment of TARDIS is , known in the UK for her roles in television and theater.
