The population is 50 thousand inhabitants (2008, excluding the city of Baikonur ).
The regional center is the village of Zhosaly .
The Syr Darya River crosses the territory of the district. The Samara-Shymkent highway and the railway pass through the territory of the district.
On the territory of Karmakshy district there are archaeological sites of Dzhetyasar and the ruins of the fortress of Zhusandal .
On the territory of the Karmakshy region, the Baikonur complex, rented by Russia, is located.
