History
The construction of the South Bridge was started on November 8, 1906 , and traffic on the bridge was opened on April 5, 1910 . Construction costs amounted to 5.5 million marks [2] . The entrance to the bridge was decorated with Neo-Romanesque towers, designed by architect Franz Schwechten , who designed similar towers for the Hohenzollern bridge . The bridge was opened without the usual ceremony in such cases. This was due to mourning for eight workers who died in an accident during construction.
On January 6, 1945, during one of Cologne ’s 262 bombings by British aircraft, the South Bridge was destroyed. Immediately after the end of the Second World War , work began on the restoration of the bridge and in May 1946 the movement on the bridge was restored, however, only one track. After the reconstruction, the bridge was completely opened on October 1, 1950 , with restoration costs of 10 million marks.
In December 2009, work began on the repair and modernization of the South Bridge. 5.1 million euros were allocated for these works [2] . The work was completed in October 2012 [3] .
