University History
Wayne's modern university was formed by the merger of several colleges and schools. The Detroit Medical College, which was founded in 1869, became the foundation of the university’s medical school, and the Detroit Normal Training School, which was founded in 1881, became the foundation of the education school. In 1896, the Central High School of Detroit was built by Old Main, where university courses began to be offered. These courses were subsequently developed at Detroit Junior College and College of the City of Detroit, which became the foundation of the modern College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The first dean of the college was David L. Mackenzie. In 1933, the Detroit Education Council merged all of these schools and colleges (as well as engineering, pharmaceutical, and graduate schools) into one university, which was named Wayne University.
The university developed rapidly, opening the School of Social Work in 1935, the Law School in 1927, and the School of Business in 1946. In 1956, the university was renamed Wayne State University.
