The Vladimir-Volyn Historical Museum - one of the oldest collections of antiquities of the Volyn Territory - was founded in 1887. Then, representatives of the intelligentsia, and lovers of antiquities organized in the city "Ancient Storage" - a prototype of the modern museum. At the beginning of the 20th century, this collection already numbered hundreds of valuable exhibits: manuscripts, old printed books (including the Gospels of the 16th century), icons, and coins. The museum was headed by a local history enthusiast, a nobleman E. N. Dvernitsky (1838-1906), chairman of the Brotherhood of St. Vladimir. A lot of exhibits of the Vladimir-Volyn "Ancient Storage" during the First World War was transferred to Kharkov museums. In the interwar period, the historical museum was located on the premises of the former Dominican monastery, an architectural monument of the 15th – 18th centuries.
