The film received positive reviews from critics, was commercially successful and marked the beginning of a successful career for leading actors. Mina Kumari received her first of four awards in the “Best Actress” category at the Filmfare Awards [1] , while composer Naushad won his only award for the song “Tu Ganga Ki Mauj”.

Story
The film is based on an ancient Indian legend about the famous court musician Tansen and folk singer Baiju.
During the time of Emperor Akbar the Great , when Baiju was still a child, his father died in a fight with Tansen, who tried to stop him from singing. Before his death, the father took a promise from his son that he would take revenge on Tansen.

Remake
In November 2010, a remake of the film was announced. The director, screenwriter and producer will be the Indian-American director Krishna Shah. The role of Baiju Bavra will be played by Aamir Khan [2] .
