The hypothesis of Austronesian-Austro-Asian kinship is substantiated in the works of the Austrian scientist Wilhelm Schmidt ( 1906 ) and other linguists. He expressed the opinion of the kinship of the Malay-Polynesian (Austronesian) languages with the languages of the Austro-Asian ( Mon-Khmer and Munda ). His point of view was later supported by the American scientist Paul Benedict (in 1942 , 1966 ), who included in this macro-family (which was called Austrian) Thai-Kadai (formerly mistakenly classified as Sino-Tibetan ).
The assumption of the kinship of Miao-Yao with the Austro-Asian was reflected in the works of the French scientist A. Audricourt ( 1961 ) and others
John Bengston , in addition to the four families mentioned above, considers two isolates as part of the Austrian languages - Ainu and Nihali .
Proponents of the Austrian hypothesis point to the existence in these languages of a number of common roots , common prefixes and infixes . However, the kinship of Austrian languages can finally be proved only after the discovery of regular phonetic correspondences between the compared families.
