Lavigne began her career as a child actor with performances in the theater, primarily in a cabaret. She won her first wide acclaim in 1966 after her role in the Broadway musical “This Is A Bird ... This Is A Plane ... This Is Superman”, and in 1970 received the first Tony Award nomination for her role in the play Last of the Red Hot Lovers . She moved to Hollywood in 1973 and began her career in film and television, gaining wider recognition for her major role in the television series Alice (1976-1985), which brought her two Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy nomination [ 1] . In 2013, Lavigne returned to television with a role in the sitcom " Sean Saves the World ."

In 1987, she returned to Broadway and won the Tony Award for her lead role in the play Broadway Connections. In total, she was nominated five times for the Tony : in 1980, 1987, 1998, 2001 and 2010, having won once, in 1987. She also won three Drama Desk awards: in 1969, 1987 and 2008 [2] .
