Biography

Bernard Buffet was born in Paris , where he studied art at the School of Fine Arts (École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, 1943 - 1945 ). Among his classmates were Maurice Buatel and Luis Vuillermoz.

He worked in the studio of the artist Eugene Narbonne.

With the support of Maurice Garnier, art dealer Bernard Buffet, he worked continuously to create religious paintings, landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. In 1961, the artist writes a series of paintings depicting the life of Christ, intended to decorate the chapel of the castle of Arcs in the municipality of Fuvo [3] . Ten years later, at the request of Pope Paul VI , Buffet will offer these paintings to the Vatican Museum , where they are exhibited in a separate room.

At least one of his main exhibitions was held annually until the suicide of October 4, 1999 at his home in Turtur in southern France. On October 4, 1999, at the age of 71, Buffet, suffering from Parkinson's disease , was no longer able to work as he wanted. Police say that Buffe died around 4 p.m., putting a plastic bag over his head and securing it with duct tape around his neck.

Bernard Buffet was married to writer and singer Annabel Buffet ( French Annabel Buffet ).

Jury member of the 1958 Cannes Film Festival .

Buffet created more than 8000 paintings, as well as many prints.

On November 25, 1973, in the Nagaizumi municipality of Shizuoka Prefecture , Japan , the Bernard Buffet Museum was founded, founded by Kiichiro Okano (1917-1995) [4] . In 1988, the museum was expanded. After the death of Buffet, the ashes of the artist were scattered in the museum garden.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the popularity of Buffet's works was quite high, however, in the last decades of the 20th century, interest in the artist declined. The decline in interest was partly influenced by the departure of French art historians from supporting figurative art. In the 21st century, attention to the work of Bernard Buffet again increased, which entailed successful exhibitions in France and around the world.

In 2016, the British writer Nicholas Folks published the book “ Bernard Buffet: the invention of the modern mega-artist” [5] , in which he offers a controversial biographical account of the life and work of Buffet.
