Throughout its history, Frankfurt Cathedral was the Kaiser Cathedral , and not the cathedral of the bishopric . Its great importance as a national symbol is based, rather, on a political and historical role in the Holy Roman Empire . In the XIX century, the cathedral became a symbol of the unity of the German nation.

History

The land beneath the cathedral was once an island between two rivers. This area was inhabited in the Neolithic era, and continuously inhabited at least since the Celtic era, that is, over the past 2500 years.

In the era of the Roman Empire, a chapel ( 83 - 260 year ) stood on the site of the cathedral, then the estate of the estate, then buildings considered to be the forerunners of the cathedral: Merowing Palace chapel ( VI century ), Carolingian palace chapel ( VIII - IX century ) and Salvatorbasilika Basilica of the Savior ( IX- XIII century ). In the XIII century, parts of the building were rebuilt and rebuilt, and this time can be considered the beginning of the era of the modern cathedral.

The last destruction of the cathedral was a fire in 1867 and a bombing during World War II . Each time after the (partial) destruction of the cathedral was restored.

In the 1990s, the grave of a noble girl of the 7th century was discovered. A gravestone was installed over the grave.

The most valuable relic stored in the Frankfurt Cathedral is considered the upper part of the skull of the Apostle Bartholomew , who since 1239 is considered the patron saint of the cathedral.
