The last season in the Ontario Hockey League was the most successful for the striker in his junior career. According to the results of the championship, Segin received two individual OHL awards: “ Red Tilson Trophy ” and “ Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy ” - the first as the best hockey player and the second as the best scorer of the league. Tyler was also named the most promising player in the Canadian Hockey League . On August 3, 2010, he signed his first professional contract with the Bruins and two months later made his debut in the NHL. As part of Boston, Tyler won the Stanley Cup 2011 , and the finalist of the Stanley Cup 2013 . After moving to the Dallas, Segin took a more familiar place on the ice on the ice - in the central line of attack. The hockey player began to play in the first link of the team, where Jamie Benn became his partner. According to the results of two regular championships: 2013/14 and 2014/15 , - a bunch of hockey players was among the ten most successful pairs of attackers in the NHL according to the points they scored.

Segin performed at the 2015 World Cup , where he won gold awards as part of Canada and also became the best sniper of the world championship.

Childhood and Youth

Tyler was born on January 31, 1992 in Brampton . Segin’s parents - Paul and Jackie - who played hockey in their youth, instilled in their son a love of this sport. At the age of 4, Tyler learned to skate, and he moved so quickly and deftly for a child of his age that Jackie realized that her son had a talent that would certainly allow him to become a hockey player [4] [5] . When Tyler was 5 years old, Segin’s father insisted that his son start playing hockey. Later, Paul became a mentor for his child and always helped Tyler with advice [5] [6] . The idol of little Segin in childhood was the long-time leader and captain of the Detroit Red Wings , Steve Aizerman , whose game Tyler did not cease to admire even after he grew up and became a professional hockey player [6] [7] . Segin’s childhood passed in Brampton, and he studied in a suburb of Toronto , in a private high school named after St. Michael [8] .

The first children's team Segin played in was Whitby Wildcats. [3] Wildcats coaches initially put Tyler in defense, but after several matches he showed an unsatisfactory defense and was soon transferred to the position of striker . At the age of 12, Tyler played along with the guys who were 2-3 years older than him, and due to his good speed qualities stood out on the ice among his peers [9] . After 7 years at Whitby, Segin began playing on the Toronto Nationals team system, where his partner was Jeff Skinner [3] [10] . To develop sleight of hand, as well as improve other hockey skills, Tyler, on the advice of his father, was engaged in lacrosse in the summer. However, at age 14, due to great physical exertion, Segin had to leave lacrosse and focus on hockey [11] [12] . Tyler spent the 2007/08 season in the Greater Toronto Hockey League in the championship among the teams of the older age group, playing for the “Young Nationals” as an alternative captain [13] .

Junior career

Ontario Hockey League Debut

The Central Scouting Bureau of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) rated Tyler as a player who can launch attacks, has dexterity, good speed qualities, good skating and a vision for the hockey field [14] . In the 2008 OHL draft, Segin was selected in the 1st round under the common 9th number by the Plymouth Whalers club [15] . Tyler, like his father, also had the opportunity to play for one of the teams of the National University Sports Association to receive a sports scholarship and study at a higher educational institution, but in the end the attacker chose to play as part of the Whalers [16] . Segin's OHL debut took place on September 19, 2008, in a meeting with the Kitchen Rangers team. The next day, in a game against the Erie Otters , Tyler scored the first scoring point he earned for an assist. The hockey player abandoned his puck in Plymouth on November 7 in a match against Gelf Storm [17] .

Segin completed the regular season 2008/09 with a total of 67 points - 21 goals and 46 assists. According to the results of the championship, Tyler turned out to be the leader in scoring and abandoned goals among the newcomers of the Whalers, and also took third place in the list of snipers and scorers of his team [18] . In the playoffs of the J Ross Ross Robertson Cup 2009, Plymouth was able to reach the semifinals of the Western Conference, where in a series of 6 matches the Wilers lost the fight to advance to the next round of the Winsor Spitfires [19] . After the season ended, the attacker was included in the first OHL Young Stars Team [20] .

Winner of the Red Tilson Trophy and Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy

Segin from the first games of the 2009/10 championship began to regularly score points in matches for his team. The attacker scored the first hat-trick with Plymouth on September 26 in a meeting against London Knights , and by December Tyler had four hat-tricks. After the first half of the season, Segin turned out to be the leader by points among league players and became one of the main contenders for the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy - a prize awarded annually to the best scorer of OHL. Also in December, the striker was named the best hockey player of the month in the Ontario Hockey League [21] [22] .

Tyler in January 2010 took part in the CHL All-Star Game Held annually under the auspices of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) among promising NHL draft participants in the three largest Canadian junior hockey leagues: the Ontario Hockey League, the Quebec Main Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League . As part of the Orr Team, Segin went on the ice as a team captain [23] . In February, the striker also played in the OHL All-Star Game, where he represented the Western Conference team in the Super Skills speed competition [24] .

The main competition in the struggle for the title of the best scorer of the season to Segin was Taylor Hall . Both hockey players in the second half of the championship showed quite high performance, and in early March each of them reached the mark of 100 points scored [25] . At this point, Tyler managed to make the fifth hat-trick [21] , but in the end he did not manage to get around Taylor in the list of scorers. Segin and Hall, scoring 106 scoring points, together became the owners of the “Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy”, and for the first time since the establishment of the award it was presented to two players at once [26] [27] . The Whalers managed to get into the playoffs of the Jay Ross Robertson Cup 2010, where in the semi-finals of the conference again, like a year ago, they lost the fight for reaching the next round of Spitfires [28] . As a result of the championship, Tyler received another individual award - the Red Tilson Trophy , as the best player of the season in the Ontario Hockey League, as well as the striker was named the most promising player of the CHL [13] [29] . In addition, Segin was included in the first Team of all OHL stars and the first Team of all CHL stars [30] [31] .

NHL Career

Draft

Segin and Hall were the main favorites of the 2010 draft, both in the opinion of the Central Scout Bureau of the NHL (CSS) and in terms of the International Scout Agency (ISS). Tyler became the leader in the final ranking of North American field players CSS, and Taylor topped the final overall ranking of young hockey players according to ISS [32] [33] [34] . According to the results of the lottery, where the order of young hockey players was determined by the clubs, the right to choose was the first to be won by the Edmonton Oilers , the worst team of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the 2009/10 season , and the second by the Boston Bruins club, which received another draft pick [approx. 2] the first round according to the terms of the exchange of Phil Kessel in the Toronto Maple Leafs [35] . Since each of the attackers with his game stood out strongly among the other participants in the draft, the experts were unanimous in their opinion - they would choose Tyler and Taylor under the first and second numbers. It remained unclear which of the hockey players would begin their professional careers as part of Edmonton, and who as part of Boston [32] . The leadership of both clubs considered the possibility of obtaining rights to both Segin and Hall, but the Oilers, choosing the first, had the advantage [36] [37] . June 24, the day before the start of the draft procedure, the general manager of "Edmonton" Steve Tambellini In an interview with reporters, he said that he had decided on a newcomer who would play in his team, but did not give a name that day [38] . As a result, it turned out to be Hall, which became the first draft pick in 2010, and Boston received the rights to Segin [39] .

Stanley Cup Winner

Tyler in the debut season in the NHL, speaking for “Boston”, won the Stanley Cup

On August 3, 2010, Segin, having signed a three-year contract, became a Boston Bruins player. According to the financial terms of the agreement, the base salary of the hockey player was set at 900 thousand dollars a year. Tyler could also count on receiving various bonuses, the total amount of which in one season could reach $ 2.85 million [40] . The 2010/11 Bruins season began in Europe with two exhibition games, where the Phoenix Coyotes team became their rival. Segin’s debut as part of Boston took place on October 9 at the O 2 Arena [13] [41] . On October 10, in his second match for Boston, the striker scored a goal against Ilya Bryzgalov and opened the scoring to the NHL goals [42] . In January 2011 , Tyler, as a newcomer, received an invitation to the NHL All-Star Game , where he participated only in the Super Skills contest [43] . The striker was among the players of the Staal Team and represented his team in the competition for the strongest throw. With a result of 170.39 km / h, Zdeno Hara eventually won the competition, and Segin managed to throw one of the pucks at a speed of 156.23 km / h [44] .

The Bruins finished the season in 3rd place at the Eastern Conference , which allowed the team to enter the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs [45] . After the regular season ended, the striker lost his place in the main squad of Boston. The Bruins head coach Claude Julien believed that the rookie’s defensive skills weren’t well developed, which prevented Tyler from joining the team’s application for the games of the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the conference [46] . Segin was able to play his first matches in the playoffs only after the injury of Patrice Bergeron , and the coaching staff of the team decided to replace Patrice with Tyler. The debut of the striker in the playoffs took place on May 14 in the first game of the Eastern Conference finals, where the Tampa Bay Lightning club was the rival of Boston. The meeting ended with the Bruins victory with a score of 5: 2, and Segin scored 2 points in that match, scoring the puck and giving an assist [47] . The next game against Lightning turned out to be even more productive for Segin: the striker managed to score 2 goals and 2 assists. With a total of 4 points, Tyler turned out to be the only newcomer to the league in 22 years who managed to record 4 resultant points in one match in the playoffs. The last such achievement before Segin was only Trevor Linden in the 1988/89 season [48] . The Bruins won the series against Tampa Bay and reached the final , where they were to play with the Vancouver Canucks . The final series ultimately ended with a Boston victory 4–3, allowing the Bruins to win the Stanley Cup for the first time in 39 years [49] .

Bruins Best Sniper and Top Scorer

Segin in the 2011/12 season became the youngest player in Bruins history to win the scorers race

The 2010/11 season was the first in the NHL for Segin, however, this did not prevent the young striker to prove himself in the matches for Boston. Tyler was able not only to gain a foothold in the squad, but also fully fit into the Bruins game scheme and strengthen his team’s attack line [50] . At the start of the new regular season, the striker showed high performance - after 13 matches played, the hockey player had 15 points scored. On November 5, 2011, in a match against the Toronto Maple Leafs , Segin scored the first hat-trick in the NHL [51] . Regularly distinguished by goals scored, Tyler quickly managed to lead the list of snipers of his team. The second game week of November for the striker was one of the most successful of the season (Segin scored 6 points in 3 matches), and as a result, the hockey player was awarded the title of the first star of the league [52] . Thanks to Tyler’s good performance, Boston, which started the season unsuccessfully, managed to get close to the playoff zone in the standings by mid-November [53] . The forward was also noted by Claude Julien, who expressed the opinion that it was with Tyler’s help that the team was able to overcome the crisis that hit the Bears game at the beginning of the championship [51] .

In January 2012 , Segin took part in the All-Star Game , where, according to the draft results, he was among the players of the Hara Team. Tyler represented his team in two competitions of the Superskills competition: in precision shots and in the shoot -out competition, but the attacker failed to prove himself in them [54] . The Hara Team won the Match of the Stars with a score of 12: 9, and Tyler in the game was marked by one scoring point, which he earned in the third period for an assist [55] .

In the second half of the championship, the striker retained the title of best Bruins sniper. Tyler had the opportunity to become the first Boston player who managed to score 30 goals in a season, but Segin was not able to reach this mark [56] . According to the results of the regular season 2011/12 , having 29 goals and 67 points, Tyler became the leader among the Bruins players in the number of goals and goals scored. In addition, Segin turned out to be the youngest hockey player in the history of his team, who managed to win the scorers race [57] . Boston finished the regular season in 2nd place at the Eastern Conference and was able to get among the 16 teams that continued to fight for the Stanley Cup [58] . However, already in the first round, the Bruins lost the Washington Capitals series with a score of 3-4 and completed their performance in the playoffs of 2012 [59] .

NHL Lockout and Stanley Cup Final

In January 2015 , the striker took part in the NHL All-Star Game for the second time in his career, where he turned out to be among the players of the Teyvs National Team according to the draft. Tyler represented his team in three Superskills contests: speed races, skill relay races and in the shootout competition (Segin was able to prove himself only in the latter) [89] . The Teivza Team won the All-Star Game with a score of 17:12, and Segin marked four points in the game (two goals and two assists) [90] .

On February 13, in a meeting with Florida, the Panthers defender Dmitry Kulikov , having conducted a power reception not according to the rules, injured Segin's right knee joint. Subsequently, the NHL Disciplinary Committee disqualified Kulikov for four games, and Tyler was forced to miss 10 matches due to damage. The recovery period took three weeks. Only on March 3 did the Starz coaching staff include Tyler in a request for a meeting against Tampa Bay Lightning [91] [92] . Due to a serious injury, the attacker could not continue to fight on an equal footing for “Maurice Richard Trophy” and “Art Ross Trophy” with other applicants. As a result, Alexander Ovechkin and Jamie Benn, respectively, became the winners of the awards, and to get the title of the best scorer of the season in the NHL, having 87 points in the asset, the Dallas captain managed largely thanks to the game on the same level with Segin [93] [94] . Tyler himself scored a total of 77 points, and a bunch of strikers Segin-Benn was among the 10 most successful in the league in terms of points, but this did not help the Stars to get into the playoffs of 2015 [93] [95] . Of his 77 points, Tyler 37 earned for abandoned goals, which allowed him to become the best sniper in the team for the second time [96] .

In the 2015/16 season, he scored 72 points, but at the end of the regular season he cut the Achilles tendon [97] , because of which he was forced to miss the last matches of the season and almost all the games in the playoffs, playing only in one meeting - the second first round match against Minnesota . Also, due to recovery, he was forced to miss the World Cup , held in September 2016.

The following season, Segin first held all 82 meetings and with 72 points became the team's top scorer, and with 26 goals he shared first place in the list of snipers with Benn. At the same time, “Dallas” could not get into the playoffs.

Before the 2017/18 season, the team was supplemented by Russian striker Alexander Radulov , who was put in the link to Segin and Benn. During the regular season, the link showed high performance, gaining a total of 229 points. Tyler Segin himself spent all 82 matches in which he scored 78 points and became the team's best sniper, having scored 40 goals for the first time in his career. On November 24, 2017, in a meeting with Calgary , he made another hat-trick in his career. January 28 took part in his 5th match of all stars [98] . Despite personal successes, the performance of the Stars in the season was unsuccessful. The team again did not make it to the playoffs. At the end of the season, the club’s head coach Ken Hitchcock resigned, announcing the completion of coaching. [99]

International Career

The first official international competition for Tyler was the 2015 World Cup . The coaching staff of the Canadian national team for the championship of the planet managed to collect one of the strongest squads in the previous few years [100] , and Seghin’s two Dallas partners were included in the application of the Canadians: Jason Spezza and Cody Ikin [101] . Throughout the tournament, Tyler was regularly distinguished by abandoned goals, which ultimately allowed him to be the best sniper of the championship [102] . The Canadian team at the world championship managed to reach the finals , where with a large score of 6: 1 they defeated the Russian team and won the tournament’s gold medals [100] .

Game Style

Tyler is a player who knows how to interact with partners on ice, capable of not only effectively organizing, but also productively completing attacks of his team [13] [103] . Segin has a vision of a hockey platform, which gives him the opportunity to bring his teammates to shock positions at the right time, which makes the hockey player a very good assistant for teammates [13] [14] . Due to the great offensive potential, Tyler can ensure high performance both for himself and his link as a whole [103] . On ice, Segin stands out for its dexterity, good skating, confident puck control and high speed, allowing the attacker to easily beat one-on-one enemy defenders [13] [14] [103] [104] . In Boston, Tyler played in an unusual position for the right-handed forward. After joining the Dallas, he took a more familiar place in the center of the attack at the link, where he demonstrates a more effective game than on the flank [76] [104] [105] . Segin has quite good physical data, but they cannot fully provide him with an advantage in the fight against the opponent’s overall defenders. A hockey player needs to increase his weight due to an increase in muscle mass in order to improve strength game skills [103] . Another weakness of the striker is problems with discipline, because of which Tyler has repeatedly been criticized and accused of lack of professionalism [71] [103] [106] .

Out of Ice

Tyler’s father, Paul, is from the small town of Stansted located in the south of Quebec . While studying at the University of Vermont , from 1984 to 1988, he played at the position of defender for the student hockey team “Catamounts” . He spent the last season with the Catamounts as team captain and played along with the future left wing of the Death Legion John Leclair [6] [107] [108] [109] . Paul does business - in Brampton, he owns a financial company called CardCana Corporation [4] [110] . Tyler’s mother, Jackie, has been playing hockey for several years as the center forward for the Brampton Canadettes team from the Women's Hockey Association. Tyler has two sisters: Candice and Cassidy, both 3 and 6 years younger than the hockey player, respectively [4] [5] [12] . Candice is a student at a college in Vermont , and Cassidy is in high school [111] . The hockey player owns two dogs: labradors named Marshall and Cash [112] .

Outside the ice, Segin is actively involved in social activities. After winning the Stanley Cup, the striker brought him to his native Brampton. The first who managed to see and touch the trophy were children from among patients in one of the city hospitals, where Tyler went immediately upon arrival from Boston [10] . One of the hockey player’s close friends received severe spinal cord injury in December 2012. During the 2013/14 season, in every Dallas home match, Tyler bought out a certain number of seats in the American Airlines Center VIP lounges for people with similar injuries, and also fully paid for them food and drinks during the games. Thanks to Segin’s efforts, more than 500 people with disabilities were able to see hockey live, many of them for the first time. The hockey player was a partner of the Southwest Wheelchair Athletic Association and helped this non-profit organization coordinate the distribution of tickets to sporting events held under its auspices among disabled spinal athletes. The attacker took part in a charity match held in memory of Travis Striker, a hockey player who, along with his parents, was tragically killed in a car accident. Thanks Tyler fees from the game amounted to about 20 thousand dollars. Part of the money was used to help the Travis family, and part went to the development of hockey in Texas [82] . Segin, along with other NHL club hockey players, also participated in a charity table tennis tournament organized by the Players Association. All funds received from the event (about 140 thousand dollars) were used to research rare types of cancer [113] .

Tyler is an official of BioSteel Sports Supplements Inc. - manufacturer and distributor of various food additives. The hockey player also has a valid advertising contract with the manufacturer of branded sportswear and accessories - Under Armor [114] . During a performance with Boston, Segin advertised the services of the Dunkin 'Donuts caffeine network, one of the Bruins sponsors [115] . The striker in 2014 became the owner of a house that used to belong to the Starz legend Mike Modano . Segin bought his new house with a total area of 7250 square meters, with four bedrooms and six bathrooms for $ 1.9 million [116] .

There are many tattoos on Tyler’s body, most of which are dedicated to the victory in the Stanley Cup and to the close family members of the striker - parents and sisters. Segin made the very first of his tattoos at the age of 17 years [111] [117] .
