Hristia Freeland ( born Chrystia Freeland ; born February 8, 1968) is Canada’s Foreign Minister on January 10, 2017 [3] and a member of the House of Commons on November 24, 2013 . The journalist has held various editorial positions in the Financial Times , Globe and Mail and Thomson Reuters , where she was the managing director and editor of consumer news when she announced her dismissal and her intention to run for election to the Canadian Parliament from the Liberal Party .

Biography
Born in the town of Peace River in the northern part of Alberta [4] [5] . Her father, Donald Freeland, was a lawyer and member of the Liberal Party of Canada [6] with English and Scottish roots. Mother Galina Khomyak (1946-2007) was born in the American occupation sector of Germany in Bavaria ( Bad Wörishofen ) into a Ukrainian family [7] , she was also a lawyer and in 1988 ran for elections in the Edmonton-Strathkon district in from the New Democratic Party [8] [9] . Father Christie's paternal grandfather John Freeland (1916–2011) was born in Canada , was a veteran of World War II (although he did not participate in combat operations, rescuing on the waters off the coast of Great Britain ), after the war he practiced law and farming in his native town of Peace River, Alberta. Glasgow -born paternal grandmother Helen Colefield married John Freeland when part of it was housed in Scotland .
Maternal grandfather Mikhail Khomyak actively collaborated with the Nazis and was the editor-in-chief of the collaborationist Ukrainian-language newspaper Krakivsky Visti " [10] , which glorified Adolf Hitler , the Wehrmacht and the SS , conducted anti-Semitic , anti-Polish and anti-Soviet propaganda [11] [12] . Before the end of the war, he fled through Vienna to Bavaria, where he surrendered to the American authorities and later emigrated to Canada. Hristia Freeland herself claimed that her grandfather fled to Canada “after Hitler and Stalin signed the non-aggression pact in 1939” and was a victim of the war [11] [12] . She called the surfaced data on the collaborationism of her grandfather “Russian disinformation” [13] , although, as it turned out, she knew about it earlier [14] .
Freeland studied at the Adriatic College of the United World [15] in Duino , Italy . She received a bachelor of arts degree in Russian history and literature from Harvard University, and in 1993 a master's degree in studies in Slavic studies at St. Anthony’s College in at Oxford University , where she studied under a Rhodes scholarship [16] [17] .
Freeland began her journalistic career in Ukraine as a stringer for the Financial Times , The Washington Post and The Economist [18] . Later, she worked at the Financial Times in London as deputy editor, editor of British news, head of the Moscow bureau, correspondent in Eastern Europe , editor of the Sunday publication, and editor of the Financial Times website, FT.com [18] .
From 1999 to 2001, she worked as deputy editor of the Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail [18] , after which she took up the position of managing director of the Financial Times in the USA . In March 2010, Freeland assumed the post of editor at Thomson Reuters [19] , and in April 2011 became editor of Thomson Reuters Digital [20] . Prior to leaving Thomson Reuters, Freeland was Managing Director and Consumer News Editor [21] . She also worked as a weekly columnist for Globe and Mail [22] .
Freeland is a frequent guest on American television and radio. She took part in the talk show “ Real Time with Bill Maher six times " [23] . And also participated in the programs of “ The McLaughlin Group "," The Dylan Ratigan Show "," Imus in the Morning "," Fareed Zakaria GPS " And " The Colbert Report . " He is a frequent guest in the political talk show “ Left, Right & Center " On the radio station " KCRW " . In June 2013, Freeland gave a speech at the TED Talks , dedicated to issues of economic inequality, plutocracy and globalization [24] .
Author of the books “Selling the Century” (2000) on the transition of Russia from communism to capitalism [16] and “Plutocrats: the heyday of global super-rich and the decline of everyone else” (2012) [25] . The Plutocrats are on the New York Times bestseller list and receive the Lionel Gelber Award for the non-fiction coverage of international affairs [26] , as well as the National Business Book Prize as the most prominent Canadian book related to business.
Political Activities
On July 26, 2013, Freeland left journalism to run for election to the House of Commons of Canada from the Liberal Party in Toronto Center County . On September 15, 2013, she won the primaries [27] , and on November 25 received 49.38% of the vote, defeating journalist Linda McKweg from the New Democratic Party (NDP) [28] .
Since March 2014, it has been included in the list of Canadian officials who are prohibited from entering Russia in response to Canada’s sanctions against Russia [29] .
On October 19, 2015 she was again elected to parliament, now from the new University-Rozdale district (partly located in the old Toronto Center district), gaining 49.80% of the vote, defeating TV presenter and political activist Jennifer Hollett from the NDP. On January 10, 2017, instead of Stephen, Dion was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada in the government of Justin Trudeau , who on that day changed the heads of six ministries. [thirty]
Personal life
Married to Graham Bowley, a British writer and reporter for The New York Times. [31] They have two daughters and a son [32] , who received Ukrainian names - Natalka, Galya and Ivan. He speaks English , French , Ukrainian , Russian , Polish and Italian .
