Maytag

Maytag District ( Uig. مايتاغ رايونى; Maytaƣ Rayoni ) or Dushanzi District ( Chinese р子 区 , Pinyin : Dúshānzǐ Qū ) is a district in the Karamay City District of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the PRC . The Chinese name means “lonely mountain”, the Uyghur - “oil mountain”.

History

As early as 1897, oil was discovered in these places. In 1936, with the help of the USSR, attempts began to organize oil production here. After the formation of the PRC, intensive development of these places began, more than ten thousand people moved here. On February 22, 1955, a working committee was formed to manage the mining region of Dushanzi. In 1956, the village of Dushanzi was created. In 1958, Karamay city district was created, and Dushanzi became its district. In 1984, Karamay was removed from the Chuguchak district and came under direct subordination to the government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, but at the same time, Karamay’s division into districts was eliminated, and Dushanzi again became a village. On August 8, 1990, Karamay again became an urban district, and the Dushanzi area was restored.

Geography

The area is an exclave : it is separated from the rest of the Karamay city district by the territory of the Kuytun Ili-Kazakh Autonomous District located north of the city. On the other sides, the district is surrounded by the urban county of Usu of Chuguchak district .
