Biography

The early medieval history of Carcassonne is rather poorly covered in contemporary events of historical sources . Including, the sequence of chapters of the Carcassonian diocese of this time has not been precisely established [1] .

The date of his visit to the department is unknown. Also unknown is the name of his immediate predecessor: the previous Bishop of Carcassonne, mentioned in the sources, was St. Stephen , who in 683 attended the XIII Cathedral of Toledo [2] .

Bishop Hispitcion took part in the work of the , held on June 27, 788 [3] in Narbon . At this meeting, convened at the call of Pope Hadrian I of , bishops of Narbonne and Arles dioceses headed by their metropolitans Daniel and Elifantom condemned adoptsianskie theory Archbishop of Toledo Elipando and the Bishop of Urgell Felix , forcing the latter to publicly renounce his views [4] .

The mention of the name of Hispitius in the acts of the Council of 788 is the only evidence of this bishop in his contemporary sources. The late medieval catalogs of the heads of the Carcassonian diocese report that he died in the year 798. For a long time it was assumed that the successor of Hispition at the local department was Bishop Roger, allegedly approved in this office by Pope Leo III in the year 800. However, it was subsequently established that all documents that mention the name Roger are fakes [5] . Currently, the next bishop of Carcassonne after the Hispition is the Senor , witnessed in one of the charters of the year 813 [2] .
