Creation History
The book series “The Masterpieces of Ballet” of the publishing house “Art” was conceived in the early 1980s as a series of studies by major ballet scholars and ballet historians on the best examples of the classical heritage of Russian ballet: “The series“ Masterpieces of Ballet ”acquaints wide readership with outstanding Russian ballets, Soviet and foreign composers staged on the Russian and Soviet stage: with the history of their productions, with the most interesting features of their interpretation, reveals the richness and variety of expressive means, the finest features and nuances that best ballerinas and dancers confer images of heroes, in accordance with the creative personality. Books about the masterpieces of the ballet theater will help fans of this art to more fully experience the depth of their content, to appreciate the skill, poetry, and spirituality of performance ” [1] .
The first book in the series was the monograph of Swan Lake , a famous ballet critic and ballet critic Alexander Demidov , which was released in 1985. This publication has become a milestone in ballet science. For the first time, new criteria for research work, editorial, bibliographic, and literary designation were outlined. The creation of a number of such books about individual ballet performances promised to open a new page in the science of ballet.
Before the collapse of the USSR , only one more monograph of the series managed to be published - The Sleeping Beauty by Marina Konstantinova (1990). Then the release of the series was suspended, the publisher ceased to exist. Only in 1996 did the last book of this series “ The Nutcracker ” by Galina Dobrovolskaya appear today. It was published in St. Petersburg by the MOL publishing house under the auspices of the Russian Institute for the History of Arts .
