Geography

Beach on the lake

Winnipeg Lake is Canada’s fifth-largest freshwater lake, but relatively shallow (its average depth is only 12 m [1] , with the exception of a narrow, 60 meters deep channel connecting the northern and southern parts of the lake). Winnipeg Lake is the 12th largest freshwater lake in the world.

On the eastern side of the lake virgin taiga forests grow and many rivers flow, this area can soon be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List . The lake has an elongated shape, the length from south to north is 416 km [3] , the lake has long sandy beaches , large limestone cliffs and many caves with bats in some areas. There are several hundred islands on the lake, most of them uninhabited and wild. The catchment area of the lake is about 984200 km², this territory includes the provinces of Canada Alberta , Saskatchewan , Manitoba , Ontario , as well as the US states of Minnesota and North Dakota .

Some rivers flowing into the lake: Saskatchewan , Red River (some sources use the translation: Red River), Winnipeg , Bloodwine , Poplar , Manigatogan , Behrens , Mukutava , Black River .

Settlements on the shores of the lake: Grand Rapids, Behrens River, Grand Mare, Hekla, Gimli, Jackhead Harbor.

History

It is believed that the first European to visit the shores of the lake was fur trader Henry Kesley in 1690 . He kept the local Native American name for the lake: wīnipēk, which means "muddy waters". The first fort in Winnipeg was built in the 1730s . Later, the Colony on the Red River south of the fort was named for the lake and began to be called Winnipeg , the capital of the province of Manitoba .

National Use

The cascade of power plants “ ” on the Nelson River flowing from the lake produces electricity for the province and for export. The dam of the highest power station in the cascade - Jenpeg, designed by the Soviet Institute Hydroproject and equipped with Soviet-made turbines - allows you to adjust the water level in the lake, effectively turning it into a reservoir, similar to what the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station did with Lake Baikal .

Recreational fishing , specializing in pikeperch , northern pike and lake sturgeon , but small and yellow perch are also caught [4] .

Nature Conservation

On the coast of the lake there are two nature reserves and a provincial park. On the eastern shore of the lake is the Poplar / Nanovin Rivers Wildlife Refuge. In the central part of the lake is the Fisher Bay Nature Reserve, located along the shores of the bay of the same name and on the islands. In the southern part of the lake is Hekla / Gringston Provincial Park.
