Azerbaijan at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 was presented by Sabina Babayeva with the song “ When The Music Dies ” under the 13th number. She was selected at the Azerbaijani national final of the qualifying competition. As the representative of the country, the hostess of the competition Sabina Babaeva spoke immediately in the final, which will be held on May 26, 2012 . With 150 points, she took 4th place.

This year, the contest was covered by the Public Television Channel , which organized the National Qualification Contest for Eurovision Song Contest 2012, thanks to which a participant from Azerbaijan was chosen. Broadcasters of the contest were TV presenters Kenul Arifgyzy and Saleh Bagirov.
Artist
Sabina Babaeva is an Azerbaijani jazz singer. Born December 2, 1979 in Baku , in the family of a military man and pianist. She graduated from the Asef Zeynalli Music College in vocals. For more than seven years she was a soloist in the vocal and instrumental ensemble Aypara. In 2001, she won the Golden Key Republican contest among young performers. In 2009 she received Grand Prix awards of the song contests Amberstar ( Latvia ) and Slavic Star ( Moscow ). She was also a soloist of the Jazz Center in Baku. In 2010, she played the role of Fleur-de-Lys in the musical Notre-Dame de Paris .
He performs songs in the style of pop and soul , as well as Azerbaijani folk and original songs in specific variations [1] .
National Selection
The selection was conducted according to the 2011 selection rules. The same team worked on the project as last year - TV presenters of the channel Leyla Aliyeva and Khusnia Maharramova, presenter Kamran Guliyev, directors of the show Jeykhun Karimov and Salam Mammadaliev, producer of the project Vugar Aliyev.
The Public Television Channel (ITV) announced that 119 applications had been submitted for participation in the national selection. On November 3, 2011, ITV started the first day of listening to performers who applied for participation in the national qualifying round. During the audition, which also lasted on November 5 and 7 , each participant was supposed to present 2 compositions revealing his vocal potential, show stage culture and dancing skills. The jury, which selected candidates for participation in the show, included television presenters Leyla Aliyeva and Usniya Magerammova, who comment on the Eurovision Song Contest from the very first year of its broadcast in Azerbaijan on ITV; representative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, chief editor of OK magazine Zahra Badalbeyli , Honored Artist of Azerbaijan Tunzalya Agayev and People's Artist Natavan Sheikhova [2] . As a result, 72 artists were selected.
On November 28, the Eurovision 2012 national qualifying round was launched on the Public Channel. The star of Eurovision 2010 opened the national selection with her performance, bringing Azerbaijan 5th place in the international competition with the song Drip Drop , singer Safura Alizade . Each week, nine performers were to participate in the national selection. According to the results of voting by the audience and the jury, each performer one week received the right to participate in the next qualifying round. January 28, 2012 became known to all participants in the semifinals. They were Orkhan Karimli, Maryam Karimova, Khayyam Mustafazade, Fagan Safarov, Elton Ibrahimov, Adil Bahyshly, Sabina Babaev and Arzu Ismailov [3] .

Semifinal
The semi-final was from January 30 to February 3 . As a result of the audience’s and jury’s voting, three performers: Maryam Karimova, Khayyam Mustafazade and Adil Bahyshly could not make it to the finals.
Final
The final of the national qualifying round took place on February 12 at the Heydar Aliyev Palace . The show began at 21:00 local time. Leading the finals were Leyla Aliyeva, Khusnia Maharramova and Kamran Guliyev. In addition to Azerbaijan’s Public Television, the final was broadcast by the Turkish channel TRT Müzik , the Maltese broadcaster PBS and eurovision.tv .
As a result, the jury, which included music expert Rauf Babayev, representative of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Manzar Nuralieva, Faik Sujeddinov , musicologist Zyumryd Dadashzade, singer Zulfiya Khanbabaeva , singer Tunzalya Agayeva and general director of ITV television station Ismail Omarov , chose the winner. It was Sabina Babaeva who performed in the first, second and third rounds the songs “Seni Gemli Gohrende” , “Hero” , “Soul Sister” ( Christina Aguilera ), respectively [4] .

The first stop Sabina Babaeva in the framework of her European promotion was Budapest . On April 6, the singer appeared on the air of the music show “Kívánságkosár” on the Duna TV channel, where she performed her competitive song “ When the Music Dies ” live. Before the show, Sabina became a guest of a special backstage project - the daily reality series “Marslakók” (Martians). In the capital of Hungary, she met with representatives of this country at the competition, the Compact Disco group. The meeting was broadcast on the Térkép show. After Sabina, she attended an evening of Azerbaijani culture organized by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Hungary and the winners of Eurovision 2011, the duet Ell & Nikki , the youth chamber orchestra of the Baku Academy of Music , musicians and dancers of the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Society . On April 7, Sabina appeared on the air of the morning talk show “Ma reggel”, where she also performed her competitive song [5] .

As the country that won last year, Azerbaijan automatically reached the final. According to the draw held on January 25, 2012, Azerbaijan voted in the first semi-final together with Italy and Spain .

In the final round of the contest, Azerbaijan announced the results of voting under the 8th number, after Belgium . Singer Safura , who represented her country at Eurovision 2010, acted as the "herald" from Azerbaijan. So, Azerbaijan gave 12 points to Turkey , 10 points to Russia , and 8 points to Malta .
In turn, 21 countries voted for Azerbaijan, 20 countries did not give a single vote to Azerbaijan. Thus, Ukraine , Turkey , Lithuania and Malta gave the maximum number of points to Azerbaijan; 10 points - Russia , Moldova , Bulgaria and Georgia ; 8 points - Israel and Cyprus .

A friend of the singer Elnur Huseynov , who represented Azerbaijan at Eurovision 2008 , and who knows Sabina while still a student of the music school named after Asef Zeynalli, noted that he was happy that Azerbaijan represented Sabina Babayev at the competition [12] :
... She deserves such an honor. Sabina holds well, sings beautifully. I am proud of her, I am proud of my country! ... We have a wonderful Eurovision song, a good production, Alim Gasimov himself on stage!
