He was a leading player in the international tennis arena from 1909 to 1914. Norman Brooks , in his 1950 list of the greatest tennis players, placed Anthony Wilding fourth after Bill Tilden and the Doherty brothers , taller than Budge , Kramer , Lacoste and Perry . Brooks wrote about Wilding: “His forehand was very powerful, with a pretty strong upward rotation, which made it difficult to play since the summer. His backhand was very reliable. He was a wonderful example of masculinity and was endowed with talent and perseverance of character, which helped him reach the highest heights in tennis. " [one]

Biography
Born October 31, 1883, in Opava , near Christchurch . He was the second child (out of five) in the family of a wealthy lawyer, and his wife, Julia Anthony. [2]
He studied at Wilson's school, in Kramner Square, in Christchurch , and was the captain of the school football team. He began to win his first victories in tennis tournaments as a teenager. In addition to tennis and football, the young Anthony Wilding was also successful in rugby and cricket [2] .
He studied for one semester at the University of Canterbury , then (in 1902) left for England to study law at Cambridge University there . In 1904, he was secretary, and in 1905, he was president of the . Also, during these two years he played for the university team in matches against Oxford , in , improving the style of his game [2] .
In 1905 he made his debut in the Davis Cup as part of the Australasia team.
The following year, he won the Australasia Championship in singles and doubles, and completed his studies at the university.
From 1907 to 1909, as part of Australasia, they won the Davis Cup. And, also, in 1909 he again won the Australasia Championship.
From 1910 to 1913, being fully focused on tennis, Anthony Wilding won four times in a row at Wimbledon courts. In 1914, defending his title, he was defeated by Norman Brooks in the final (in the challenge match). In addition to single victories, Anthony Winding also won four men's doubles titles.
In the 1914 season, he and his team once again won the Davis Cup.
Wilding was supposed to represent Australasia at the 1908 Olympics in London, but was unable to compete due to an administrative mistake. Four years later, at the Games in Stockholm , he won the bronze medal in the men's singles.
In 1913, Wilding managed to make a “hat trick” - he won the three largest tournaments organized by the International Lawn Tennis Federation : Wimbledon Tournament (official grass championship), World Hard Court Championships (ground championship in Paris; this tournament was the forerunner of the French Open), as well as the world championship on indoor courts .

Military service and death
When World War I broke out , Wilding joined the British Royal Marines and served as captain on the battlefields in France. He died on May 9, 1915 during the at Nov Chapelle. He was buried in a military cemetery in Pas de Calais in France .
Memory
In 1978, Anthony Wilding was inducted at the Newport International Tennis Hall of Fame .
In honor of Wilding, a tennis center was named in his hometown, Christchurch.
