History

In 1961, Jerry Harvey and Ian Norman opened their first store, which specialized in electrical appliances and household appliances. Success prompted Harvey and Norman to expand the business. Negotiations were held with the Keith Lord retail chain, which sought to expand its retail group. [9]

In October 1982, Sydney Auburn Harvey and Norman opened a large shopping center, which became the first in the network "Harvey Norman". On September 3, 1987, Harvey Norman placed a listing on the Australian Stock Exchange .

In the early 1990s, Harvey Norman switched to the successful supermarket format in the USA, adding computer equipment and home goods to the assortment. The development of the company was limited by another retailer Joyce Mayne, which was bought by Harvey Norman in 1998, which added more than 100 additional stores to the network. [ten]

Structure

A feature of the Harvey Norman structure is that each department of the supermarket (bedding, furniture, computers, household appliances, etc.) operates under the control of a separate franchisor. Thus, many supermarkets are a combination of three or four separate enterprises with their own franchisor, which provide the holding with constant income through leasing payments and sales tax.

Since one department is virtually independent of the other, sellers work directly in their department. For example, a computer department vendor will usually not be allowed to help customers buy furniture, bedding, or household appliances.

Each department maintains its own product control. However, the warehouse is common to all departments.

Repair Products

Harvey Norman Design and Renovations ( Russian: Design and Repair ) is a subsidiary of Harvey Norman Holdings Limited. HNDR specializes in the sale of plumbing, kitchen, office and home furniture, as well as bar supplies and home theaters. Initially, HNDR stores were located in the states of Victoria , South Australia and New South Wales. Subsequently, stores in Victoria and South Australia were liquidated, leaving 5 stores in New South Wales.

Stationery

In August 2007, Harvey Norman announced its intention to compete with another Officeworks retailer. In December 2007, the company acquired Megamart and Retravision, which had an extensive network of stores capable of competing with Officeworks. [11] In March 2008, Harvey Norman announced the opening of its first two stores under the OFIS brand name (from the English office - office) in Albury and Sydney. The company plans to open 100 stores in ten years. [12] However, the first five stores turned out to be extremely unprofitable, and in February 2009 Harvey Norman announced the closure of the program in June 2009. [13]
