Biography
Born on August 16, 1938 in the village of Samarskoye, Azov District, Rostov Region. Since 1950 he lived in the city of Rostov-on-Don . In 1956 he graduated from the Rostov Aviation College and at the same time the Rostov Aero Club. Repeatedly became the champion of the USSR in aircraft modeling sports. In 1958 he graduated from the Central United Flight Technical School DOSAAF in the city of Saransk .
From 1959 to 1962 - instructor pilot at the Vyaznikov Training Aviation Center DOSAAF. From 1962 to 1965 - pilot instructor of the Rostov Aero Club. From 1965 to 1966 - pilot of the civil air fleet, flight commander at Ternopol airport.
In 1966 he graduated from the helicopter department of the School of Test Pilot (SLE) and was sent to work as a test pilot at the Flight Research Institute (LII). On the subject of the institute, he conducted a number of complex tests on helicopters Mi-2, Mi-4, Mi-6, Mi-8. Since 1972, he participated in tests of Yak-36M and Yak-38 vertical take-off and landing aircraft. He was the first to land the Yak-36M on the deck of the Kiev anti-submarine cruiser and take off with a short take-off (WRC) at the land aerodrome.
In 1975 he graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute without interruption from his main job.
He was one of the first test pilots participating in the Spiral program.
In 1977, he was enrolled in the first group of test pilots of the LII (later - a detachment of test cosmonauts of the USSR Minaviaprom) to participate in the Buran space program. From 1979 to 1980 he underwent general space training at the Cosmonaut Training Center. Yu.A. Gagarin.
On December 27, 1979, during the development of the SRS from the deck of the Minsk heavy carrier cruiser in the Ussuri Bay, he was forced to eject together with the co-pilot M. Dexbach from the Yak-38U plane, which crashed and crashed into the sea due to a failure of the nozzle turning system Marching engines (PMD).
Killed on September 8, 1980: during the take-off of the Yak-38 aircraft (No. 0307, board 45) from the deck of the Minsk TAVRK, when developing the SRS method in limiting modes, the PMD nozzle shutters did not shift, the plane descended with loss of height from the deck of the ship, hit the wheels on restrictive beam and, going beyond the edge of the deck, began to decline gently. Before sinking, the Yak-38 for about a minute walked in a fountain spray above the water itself. Kononenko did not catapult, trying to gain altitude and save the plane to the last. After this accident on the Yak-38, a number of improvements were made to increase the reliability of the PMD nozzle rotation system, and the WRC technique was specified.
He was buried in the city of Zhukovsky at the Bykovsky Memorial Cemetery .
