Biography

Since 1592 - “General of the Podolsky Lands”, full crown clerk since 1594, governor of Bratslav since 1608.

He married Elzbiet Kamenetskaya until 1593.

During the Rokosh Zebrzydowski strongly supported King Sigismund III . Participated in the Battle of Guzov .

Together with his brother Stefan, the son-in-law of Jeremiah of Moldavia , he made a successful campaign in Moldova against the Wallachians with the aim of confirming his relative Konstantin Mogilu at the state thanks .

At the end of the 16th century, Jan Potocki built a stone castle in the village of Panovtsy , which occupied part of a high cape washed by the Smotrych River on three sides and surrounded by deep moats. During the time of persecution against the Reformation in Western Europe, Jan Potocki gave shelter in the castle of the Protestant Calvinist church. Calvinists launched vigorous activity in the castle - opened schools, lower and higher (academy), founded a printing house and built a church . Books directed against the papacy were published in the Panovetsky printing house (seven Panovian publications are known). The rector of the academy Pankrati Beltser, Jan Mayus, master of philosophy Jan Zigrovsky, known for his literary works published in the Panovetsky printing house, taught at the Panovetsky Calvinist Academy and the school at her.

He participated in the Siege of Smolensk during which he died on April 22, 1611 . The body of Jan Potocki was buried in the village of Panovtsy , in the crypt of the church.

After the death of Jan Potocki, his brothers, avid Catholics, ordered the Protestants to be expelled from the Panovetsky castle. After the expulsion of the Protestants, the church was turned into a Roman Catholic chapel. Together with the church, all other Calvinist institutions were closed [2] .
