Japan Census (2005)

The 2005 Japan Population Census ( Jap. 成 年 17 国 国 勢 -) is the eighteenth Japanese census. It took place on October 1, 2005 , Heisei, 17 years old. Simplified census. On the territory of Okinawa Prefecture - the fifth census, on its return to Japan in 1971 . It was carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Japan Statistical Law [1] , a decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Japan [2] and resolutions of the administration of the Prime Minister of Japan [3] [4] . The census covered the entire territory of Japan. The object of the census was all persons who lived in Japan for more than 3 months at the time of the census. The exceptions were employees of foreign diplomatic missions in Japan and members of their families, as well as foreign military and their families. The census was conducted in two units - households and members of households. The accounting of farms was carried out for 5 criteria: type, number of members, type of housing, area of ​​housing, type of housing construction; household members were accounted for according to 12 criteria: name and surname, gender, birthday, household status, family status, citizenship, work or study, number of working hours, type of work, affiliation with the organization, position in the organization, address of the organization. The census was conducted by the Statistics Service of the Ministry of General Affairs of Japan at the level of prefectures and municipalities - cities, towns, villages. On the basis of census data, a map of census districts was created, where 50 households were in 1 district. For the census, 830,000 census takers were employed, who conducted questionnaires. In one form it was possible to enter the data of four members of one household. Preliminary census results were published by the Ministry of General Affairs in January 2006 ; final - February 26, 2010 .

Prefectures

According to the census, most people lived in Tokyo Prefecture (about 12.6 million), the smallest - in Tottori Prefecture (607 thousand). Over a quarter of the country's population lived in the prefectures of the Kanto region, with its center in Tokyo. Compared to the year 2000, the number of population in most prefectures has decreased. The largest increase was observed in Tokyo (4.2%), the largest reduction in Akita (-3.7%). In general, population growth was observed only in the prefectures close to the large urban centers of Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. The greatest population density was recorded in Tokyo Prefecture (5751 persons / km ²), the lowest - in Hokkaido Prefecture (72 persons / km ²). In all prefectures, the urban population prevailed over the rural. The highest percentage of urban population is in Tokyo (99.3%), and the smallest is Wakayama (64.0%).
