Creation History

In December 1959, an Interdepartmental Scientific and Technical Council for Space Research was created at the USSR Academy of Sciences , headed by Academician M.V. Keldysh , which is charged with developing thematic plans for the creation of spacecraft, issuing key thematic tasks, and coordinating research work and the development of the upper atmosphere and outer space, the preparation of questions of the organization of international cooperation in space research. [2]

The member of the Presidium of the Interdepartmental Scientific and Technical Council for Space Research is approved by MK K. Yangel . In the field of applied tasks of carrying out such work, NII-4 of the USSR Ministry of Defense was entrusted. [2]

In 1962, the spacecraft β€œ DS-A1 ”, β€œ DS-P1 ”, β€œ DS-MT ” and β€œ DS-MG ” were included in the second-phase launch program of the β€œ 63C1 ” launch vehicle . [3]

Design Features

The scientific hardware complex of the Cosmos-51 spacecraft included:

  • " BAS " - a device for studying the processes of interaction of meteor particles with the surface of the spacecraft;
  • " BMA " - multichannel amplitude analyzer;
  • β€œ BSD ” - block of scintillation sensors;
  • " AF-3 " - an astrophotometer;
  • a set of piezoelectric sensors "SM-Ts2" and "IEM-PZM" with amplifiers "IS-1094" and "IS-1094A";
  • two-frequency transmitter " Mayak-02 " E-177-2. [one]

Cosmos-49 spacecraft flight program

The first launch of the LV 63S1 second stage took place in May 1963. The studies are timed to coincide with the International Year of the Resting Sun (MGSS), which was held from January 1, 1964 to December 31, 1965. " [3] [4]

Launch

Cosmos-31 was launched using the Cosmos-2 launch vehicle from launch pad No. 2 of the Mayak launch complex at the Kapustin Yar training ground. The launch took place at 06:00 UTC on June 6, 1964 .

Purpose of Flight

The experiment was directed by the Leningrad Institute of Physics and Technology named after A.F. Ioffe (now the Physics and Technology Institute named after A.F. Ioffe ), Crimean Astrophysical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (now - KrAO ), Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (now - GEOCHI ). [one]

The purpose of the spacecraft "Cosmos-51" was:

  • solving scientific problems on the study of winter meteor showers and the influence of meteor particles on the surface of spacecraft; [one]
  • antimatter detection in meteor showers;
  • photometric measurement of starry sky in the ultraviolet and visible regions of the spectrum. [one]

According to other sources, the purpose of the flight was to test the gyrodynamic orientation system and study cosmic rays.

Experiment Results

The satellite worked until November 14, 1965 .

During the mission, three winter meteor showers were studied: Geminids , Ursids, and Quadrants . As a result, a number of cases of collision of a spacecraft with meteorites were noted.
