Content
Biography
Born in Paris in 1823. He was already 10 years old when his father went to the Russian service and moved with his family to Petersburg. Before arriving in Russia, Ernest Ivanovich did not know Russian [1] .
In St. Petersburg, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts (from 1842). During his studies, he received awards from the Academy of Arts: small and large silver medals (1846), small gold (1847) for the “project of the fair” . The title of the class artist (1846). He was awarded a large gold medal (1849) for the project "Exchange" and at the same time the title of class artist of the 1st degree. [2]
From June 1, 1849, he worked as chief assistant of the architect R. I. Kuzmin on the restructuring of the palace in Gatchina and the construction of the cathedral. In July 1852, he was accepted by the drawing architect to the Department of Projects and Estimates of the General Directorate of Communications and Public Buildings with the rank of a titular adviser. [3] Upon completion of work in Gatchina in October 1852, Giber was awarded the Order of St. Anna of the third degree and an annual salary of 750 rubles in silver. [four]
In 1858, Giber began teaching at the School of Civil Engineering ( Institute of Civil Engineers ), where he continued to work until 1903. In 1859, for the project of the building of the Medical-Surgical Academy, he was awarded the title of professor of architecture.
A member of the building committees of the Ministry of the Interior, the imperial court.
From 1879 to 1887, Gibert was the chief architect of the Office of Institutions of the Empress Maria , in the 1880s - the architect of the main palace administration. Chairman of the Committee, consisting of the 4th Office of the Immediate Office . From 1883 to 1909 he was chairman of the St. Petersburg Society of Architects .
In the second half of the XIX century, he actually led the construction of the empire. Giber was also the editor of the Russian magazine for architects "Architect" [5] .
In 1896 he was awarded the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky . Since 1897 - Honorary Member of the Academy of Arts.
Throughout his life, Ernest Ivanovich traveled extensively in the European part of the Russian Empire, many of his trips were connected with his professional activities. In 1873, he visited the World Exhibition in Vienna . He was interested in Old Russian architecture, Russian and Byzantine styles, which influenced his work and was especially expressed in the temples he designed in Samara and Zhytomyr .
He died in 1909. He was buried at the Smolensk Lutheran cemetery in St. Petersburg [6] .
Family
He married Olga Fegin (1838–1900), from whom he had three sons and a daughter, Olga. Ernest Ivanovich's sons also became engineers:
- Georgy-Heinrich-Vladimir Ernestovich (18.1.1872—?) Became a military engineer, rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Russian army, and after 1917 participated in the White movement . He was married to the daughter of the St. Petersburg mayor, P. I. Lelyanov , and after her death, to Julia-Ottilia-Amalia Sievers.
- Evgeny Ernestovich Giber graduated from St. Petersburg University, civil engineer, lawyer, became the husband of the poetess Mirra Lokhvitskaya
- Alexander Ernestovich Gibert became a railway engineer, designed a railway bridge in Riga , and received the rank of State Councilor .
