Story

The events of the film are set out in the form of a poem written by the main character, a cat-poet (voiced by Nick Cave). It tells about the city of cats, in which music played an important role - there were many musicians and singers in the city. The protagonist is hopelessly in love with one of the singers and often listens to her singing, sitting in the back rows of the hall.

Suddenly, the best singers and musicians begin to fade. The police, which investigates crimes, finds only traces of human legs. The hero suspects that the goal of the kidnapper, who lives in a high tower, which can be seen far on the horizon, is to create a grandiose cat pianoforte . This is a torture tool for cats, in which, when you press the keys, needles are pierced so that they scream at different voices. The hero fears for the life of his beloved singer and rushes to warn her, but is late, she is kidnapped in the middle of the night.

The city is plunged into darkness and cold, it is snowing. Unable to get rid of thoughts about suffering cats, the hero collects a squad of daredevils, who floats in boats to a distant tower. Cries of cats come from her, this crazy kidnapper plays his monstrous instrument resembling a huge organ. The hero and his companions attack the kidnapper and throw him off the tower, and release the captured cats.

The city of cats is returning to life, music and songs are again playing. The hero still creates in the unknown, typing his poem about what happened. In the last frame, next to his silhouette, a singer’s silhouette appears in the window, which gently touches the poet’s face.
