History
Initially, on this site was the wooden Spasskaya Church, erected in 1594 [2] , covered with a hedge , with a chopped bell tower and shingle- sheathed walls. The church was painted red. It was noticeably dilapidated by the end of the 18th century, and the Kursk merchants decided to build a new stone temple instead. Tobolsk cathedral temple was taken as a model for future construction. It was seen by merchants during a trip on commercial matters and impressed them with its architecture. In 1776, a new church was founded, and seven years later, in 1783, its lower throne was consecrated in the name of the great martyr Dimitry of Solunsky . The completion of the temple was carried out later, the final decoration was completed in 1793 [1] . The old wooden church was moved to the Kherson cemetery, where it was already laid in the name of the Monks Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves and remained in the old decrepit and unfinished state until 1813, when it was destroyed in connection with the construction of the church dedicated to the martyr Catherine [2] .
In 1832, according to the project of the architect Groznov, the temple was expanded by the extension of the aisles . During later perestroika, the bell tower was originally changed, topped with a dome with a cupola [1] . In 1906, the widow of the mayor of the first guild merchant Grigory Ivanovich Lavrov, Aleksandr Alekseevna, in memory of him, opened a parish school at her own expense at her own expense [2] .
In 1934 the temple was closed, and a year later the bell tower was dismantled [3] . In 1937, the temple building was rebuilt into a bakery, and on October 30, 1941 it was blown up during the retreat of units of the Red Army [3] .
Temple architecture and decoration
A large two-story stone temple in the Baroque style , the volume of the main building of which was completed by a high four with five chapters on faceted drums. To the eastern part adjoined a three - sided apse of two floors. The three-tier bell tower, after the perestroika was crowned with a tent, was connected to the temple with a small three-story refectory [1] . The attraction of the temple was a bell, weighing up to 400 pounds and famous for its special sound [2] .
