History
Initially, Douglas Walker uploaded reviews on YouTube , in which he considered films and television programs that were released long or recently. However, reviews began to receive complaints about copyright infringement from studios such as 20th Century Fox and Lionsgate , which led to the removal of videos from the service. Walker tried to upload his reviews again to other channels, marking them as new, but this did not solve the problem. Then Douglas decided to create a site together with webmaster Michael Michaud, who at that time was one of the three co-founders of Channel Awesome . The site was launched in April 2008, where all Walker's videos are uploaded to this day. Later on the site began to upload videos of other observers.
The success of Douglas reviews allowed him to hold conferences and quit his former illustrator job. Later, other thematic projects were added to the site, such as Bar Fiesta (covers entertainment events taking place in Chicago ), Blistered Thumbs (covers the content of gaming sites), InkedReality (covers anime, manga and comics). Within each project, there is a team of observers.

Issues of “That Guy with Glasses”
Nostalgic Critic
The Nostalgia Critic is the most popular Douglas Walker review series and his longest-running project.
As conceived, the Nostalgic Critic is a character who criticizes in a humorous form the films, cartoons, television series, and television shows that came out during the 1980-1990s that fell on Douglas's youth. Each review invariably begins with the phrase “Hello, I'm the Nostalgia Critic. I remember it, so you don't have to ”( Rus. Hello, I am a Nostalgic Critic. I remember this, so you don’t have to . ), Which became the hallmark of the show. In the review, the plot is retold, in which special attention is focused on various shortcomings, for example, such as the absurd acting or inconsistencies in the plot. These shortcomings are played up with various kinds of jokes, which made the show popular.
On September 14, 2012, information appeared on the site that there would be no more “Nostalgic Criticism” as a project and that this image would appear only in special issues and cameos .
On January 22, 2013, in the video “The review must go on,” Douglas announced a return to Nostalgic Critic's reviews. In new releases, Douglas began to review already new films. The style of conducting the show has changed a bit: if earlier Douglas predominantly led the show alone, sitting at a table in front of the camera, then in a new format each review has its own mini-plot, in which actors participate and the chromakey is actively used to make jokes.
The script for each issue of Douglas is with his brother Rob Walker ( born Rob Walker ).
“Ask That Guy With Glasses”
“ Ask That Guy With Glasses ” ( Ask That Guy with the Glasses ) - a show in which Douglas, dressed in a blue robe, an escort tie, with a pipe in his hands that he never lights up, answers questions sent by fans. The questions asked in a voiceover are usually absurd and absurd, so Douglas answers them with absurd answers, sometimes with a certain degree of cynicism, while maintaining an unflappable state.
This image mimics the upper class with perverse logic. Each issue ends with the phrase “There is no such thing as a stupid question, untill You ask it” ( Rus. There is no such thing as a “stupid question” until you ask it ).
Homeless Reviews with Chester A. Bum
In these episodes, Douglas, in the image of a homeless man, dressed in a brown cloak and a black and orange pompon hat, also makes reviews in a humorous form, which in essence are just a funny retelling of the plot. Unlike Nostalgic Critic's reviews, these reviews are much shorter and are made on films released recently. Every review Chester invariably begins with the phrase “OH MY GOD! THIS IS A GREATEST MOVIE I EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE !!! ”( Rus. My God! This is the best film I've ever seen in my life ) and ends up starting to beg for a trifle.
Short-term shows
- Cinema in 5 seconds . In these videos, an attempt is made in just 5 seconds to reveal the plot of the film, showing key points. These videos were one of the first on the site.
- Theme Lyrics - videos in which the opening screensavers of various television series are superimposed by songs performed by Douglas, which make fun of any features of the television series. Each video begins with the phrase “Songs, that don't need lyrics, but I added them anyway. HA! ”( Rus. These songs do not need words, but I added them anyway. Ha! ).
- ThatGuy Riffs - videos in which Douglas behind the scenes comments on educational films released in the USA in the 50s.
- Sibling Rivalry is a show in which Douglas and his brother Rob make movie reviews in the manner of At the Movies .
- How to be a pirate . In this show, Douglas in the guise of Billy Bones from Robert Stevenson ’s novel Treasure Island tries to explain what a pirate did in a tavern, namely, he taught how to be a pirate.
- Merry Zodmas . In these issues, General Zod explains how to celebrate Christmas.
- Video game revelations ( English Video Game Confessions ). In these episodes, Dominic, working as a bartender in the “Pixel Palace”, where characters from different video games go, reveals their secrets.
Demo Reel
The show of Douglas and his brother Rob, replacing for some time the Nostalgic critic. The pilot release of “The Dark Knight Begins Rising” (a parody of films about Batman Christopher Nolan ) appeared on the site on October 30, 2012.
According to the plot, Demo Reel is a small studio that is engaged in remaking films already shot, in the hope that someone will buy their scripts for a lot of money. Each episode is shot in the style of a reality show , where during the episode they show how the studio’s employees first come up with a script for the film being remade in this episode, and then record a demo recording, which includes the most striking parts of the plot. Of course, the new scenario is filled with funny moments and ridiculous twists.
In total, 5 issues were released. In a special issue of The Review Must Go On, we are told how Douglas decided to abandon this show and return to Nostalgic Critic by watching the movie Timothy Green's Strange Life .
Studio employees:
- Donnie DuPre performed by Douglas Walker (Doug Walker) - director of the studio, as well as concurrently director, actor, screenwriter and editor. A special issue of The Review Must Go On reveals that Donnie Dupree is actually a Nostalgic Critic, imprisoned in a kind of purgatory called The Story Hole. Leaving the Story Hole, the Nostalgic critic returns to the real world, but at the same time destroys the world of Demo Reel.
- Rebecca Stone (Rachel Tietz) - actress, as well as concurrently screenwriter. Due to the lack of studio workers also plays male roles.
- Tacoma Narrows (Tacoma Narrows) performed by Malcolm Ray (Malcolm Ray) - screenwriter, as well as part-time actor. The most adequate studio worker. I am extremely dissatisfied with the fact that his ideas are not taken seriously.
- Carl Copenhagen (Rob Coperhagen) in the performance of Rob Walker (Rob Walker) - operator. He speaks with a German accent, while none of the other workers knows where he comes from (which creates a considerable comic effect).
- Quinn performed by Jim Jarosz is an assistant operator, an Irish national. Carries out the work of Karl, if he is not nearby.
Major Events
First Anniversary: That Guy With The Glasses Team Brawl
On May 10, 2009, Douglas’s character, the Nostalgic Critic, and another famous character, The Angry Video Game Nerd, clashed in a comic conflict. The final video of this conflict is a large crossover , in which a comic fight was fought between a team of film observers led by Douglas Walker, on the one hand, and video game observers, led by James Rolf, on the other.
TGWTG Charity Donation Drive
In December 2009, Douglas and Rob Walkers, together with some site observers, organized a charity fundraising campaign for Ronald McDonald house [1] .
Second Anniversary: Kickassia
The site celebrated its second anniversary with the release of the full-length film Kickassia , divided into several episodes [2] .
The plot tells how a Nostalgic Critic one day announces to the Republic of Molossia the seizure of its territory, however, is refused to simply give up. The next day, he gathers a group of site observers to seize Molossia by force.
Due to the abundance of humor and funny scenes, the film received many positive reviews.
Third Anniversary: Suburban Knights
The site also celebrated its third anniversary with a feature film called Suburban Knights , also divided into several episodes [3] .
The plot of this film revolves around the artifact “The Glove of Malachite”, which grants its owner immortality and magical power. This glove is found out by the Nostalgic Critic from a report on the mysterious player Dungeons & Dragons to whom she belonged. The nostalgic critic, driven by the thought of the possible wealth from the sale of this artifact, gathers a team of observers to find it ...
This film was also a success, like Kickassia .
Disneycember
Throughout December 2011, Douglas dedicated Walt Disney's classic hand-drawn cartoons. In December 2012, Douglas viewed several Pixar cartoons as a sequel to Disneycember .
Dreamworks-uary
Since Disneycember was generally successful, Douglas dedicated February 2013 to DreamWorks animated films.
Fourth Anniversary: To Boldly Flee
On the fourth anniversary (2012), the full-length film To Boldly Flee was released [4] .
The plot of the film begins after the events of Suburban Knights . A nostalgic critic goes with his team of observers into space to investigate a mysterious anomaly called the Story Hole. At the end of the film, it turns out that the Story Hole is a portal to the real world. Having passed through it, the Nostalgic Critic realizes that he is just a fictional character (the figment of the imagination of his creator - Douglas Walker). Meanwhile, the hole begins to expand and absorb the real world. To prevent the fusion of the Story Hole with the real world, the Nostalgic Critic sacrifices himself and merges with the hole. At the end of the film, the team of observers celebrates the victory, accepting that they are literally “mistakes” - the product of the plot hole.
After the release of this film, the releases of the Nostalgic Critic stopped for a while, explaining this with the ending of To Boldly Flee . In the film itself, the plots of many science fiction films were played out, including Star Trek , Star Wars , Superman and others.
Fifth Year Anniversary: The Uncanny Valley
By the fifth anniversary, the next full-length film The Uncanny Valley was announced on the site.
Rewards
